Billy Eichner's LGBTQ+ cast shatters rom-com history in Bros trailer: 'Love is love... that is bulls---!'

Billy Eichner is moving from the street to sweet love between the sheets in the first trailer for his landmark queer, major-studio romantic comedy Bros.

Universal unveiled Wednesday the first full-length preview of the groundbreaking Hollywood project, which stars Eichner in a script he co-write with director Nicholas Stoller (Neighbors) about "two gay men maybe, possibly, probably, stumbling towards love," according to a press release.

The trailer follows Eichner's Bobby Leiber, a famous podcaster approached by a movie studio to write a gay rom-com that appeals to straight people. "Something a straight guy might like? Am I going to be in the middle of a high-speed chase and all of a sudden fall in love with Ice Cube?" he asks in the clip, before he explores what it means to write a project that "shows the world that gay relationships and straight relationships are the same," eventually exposing that myth as "bulls---" while Bobby navigates the intricacies of queer love with specific to the gay community — all while falling for a handsome love interest played by perennial Hallmark Christmas movie hunk Luke Macfarlane.

In addition to Eichner and Macfarlane, the principal LGBTQ+ cast also includes Bowen Yang (Fire Island, Saturday Night Live), Ts Madison (The Ts Madison Experience), Monica Raymund (Chicago Fire), Guillermo Díaz (Scandal), Guy Branum (The Other Two), Amanda Bearse (Married …with Children), Dot-Marie Jones (Glee), and RuPaul's Drag Race season 13 winner Symone, who briefly appears in the new trailer out of drag.

In a letter addressed Tuesday to members of the queer media, Eichner stressed his intentions with the film to the entire cast and crew from the beginning of production, and celebrated the film's landmark status as "the first gay rom ever released by a major studio" and "the first major studio film with an all LGBTQ+ cast in all the roles — even the straight roles." He also touted his position as "the first openly gay man to ever write and star in his own major studio film" in the statement.

"I wanted to make a movie that was hilarious and relatable to everyone, first and foremost I wanted to make a movie that felt authentic for the LGBTQ folks that the movie is about — and who have been so profoundly underserved by Hollywood over the years, particularly the major movie studios. From the storytelling to the casting to the crew, it was crucial for me that the needs of LGBTQ+ people were being prioritized," Eichner wrote. "And while it's insane to me that it took this long to get this movie made, it's still incredibly exciting to me — and a real sign of progress — that the same studio making movies like Jurassic World and The Fast and the Furious is also releasing this R-rated gay rom with an all LGBTQ+ cast, and with as much passion and enthusiasm as they release those other films. It's taken way too long. I wish we had a movie like BROS when I was a kid — but I'm so excited and proud that this day has finally come!"

The film is billed by the studio as "a smart, swoony and heartfelt comedy about how hard it is to find another tolerable human being to go through life with," produced by Stoller, Judd Apatow (Trainwreck), and Joshua Church (Step Brothers), with Eichner executive-producing.
