Billie Eilish Says She's 'Endlessly Thankful' 'What Was I Made For?' Received an Oscar Nomination for Best Original Song

The nominations for the 96th Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday

Billie Eilish is up for her second Oscar nomination!

Shortly after the nominations for the 96th annual Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday, the pop star, 22, and her collaborator/brother Finneas O'Connell opened up about how thrilled they are to have received a Best Original Song nomination for their Barbie contribution “What Was I Made For?.”

The Grammy winner shared an adorable photo of herself hugging the film’s star/producer Margot Robbie on Instagram, as well as a shot of the scene in which the tender ballad plays in the movie. On the latter, the sibling duo released a joint statement.

“We are so incredibly honored to receive a nomination for 'What Was I Made For?'” the hitmakers’ statement began. “As lifelong fans of film, music in film and the Academy Awards, this means everything to us. We are so grateful to the Academy, its members, and to be recognized alongside so many songwriters that we respect and admire.”

The singer-songwriters then expressed their gratitude to the team behind the blockbuster film, including Robbie, 33, Barbie director Greta Gerwig and her screenwriting partner and husband Noah Baumbach.

“Our deepest gratitude and thanks go out to the incomparable Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach for their genius vision and execution, the entire Barbie cast and crew, Lucky Chap Entertainment and the Warner Bros. Pictures team,” they wrote.

The “Bad Guy” singer and O'Connell also thanked the co-producers on “What Was I Made For?,” Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who helmed the Barbie soundtrack and received a Best Original Song nomination for “I’m Just Ken” themselves. They continued, “Thank you to Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt for weaving our song into the fabric and heart of this film so well.”

The musicians sweetly concluded by again bringing attention to Robbie (who notably did not receive a best actress nomination). “And a special shout out to Margot Robbie for her incredible foresight as a producer and brilliant performance that resonated with us so profoundly when writing this song,” the two added. “We are truly honored. Thank you."

The Happier Than Ever artist and her brother’s nomination comes two years after they won their first-ever Oscar in 2022 for writing "No Time to Die” for the James Bond film of the same name.

Her somber ballad about self-discovery from Barbie has received immense love throughout this awards season — recently taking home the Golden Globe for best original song.

“What Was I Made For?” is nominated for Best Original Song along with “I’m Just Ken,” Becky G and Diane Warren’s "The Fire Inside” from Flamin' Hot, Jon Batiste’s "It Never Went Away” from American Symphony and Killers of the Flower Moon’s "Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People),” with music and lyrics by Scott George.

Several other artists who received nominations shared how grateful they were to be recognized.

Ronson, 48, and Wyatt, 52, shared a statement with The Academy about their humorous power ballad performed by Ryan Gosling earning a nod. We're excited and grateful beyond words,” the music producers said. “This really is the highest honour to be recognized by our peers and heroes from the Academy. And in a year of so many extraordinary songs — including those from our incredible fellow Barbie contributors. It's a testament to Greta Gerwig's power to inspire and bring out the very best in everyone around her. Thank you so much."

Batiste also offered a statement to The Academy about his original track from his documentary about his journey writing a symphony while his wife Suleika Jaouad was diagnosed with cancer. "Thank you to the Academy for recognizing 'It Never Went Away,’” the Grammy winner said. “Making music is an act of survival. There was a stretch of time during which my wife Suleika was in the hospital and we weren't sure she'd make it. This song began as a lullaby, so she could have a restful aura in the hospital room.”

He continued, “Congratulations to my co-writer, Dan Wilson, and thank you to Netflix, Mercury Studios, Higher Ground, and our brilliant director, Matthew Heineman, for sharing our story with the world. We are grateful to be surrounded by love."

Becky G, meanwhile, posted to Instagram to express how shocked she was at the news that her song from Eva Longoria’s directorial debut about the inventor of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos received a nod.

The Latin music star, 26, posted a handful of photos from the moment she found out about the nomination on her Instagram Story, as well as a thoughtful, teary-eyed video of herself thanking the songwriter behind “The Fire Inside,” Warren, 67, and its filmmaker. “This film, this team, this song represents something so close to my heart — it is my heart,” she said in the clip. “This is literally one of my dreams coming true in front of the world.”

In the caption, she explained further how overwhelmed with emotion she was and spoke to how honored she was to be a part of Flamin’ Hot to begin with. “When icons like Diane and Eva invite you to be a part of anything, YOU SAY YES OK???? Thank you for trusting me to bring part of this vision to life,” she wrote.

There are no words to describe what this means para nuestra comunidad 🤎,” the “Can’t Get Enough” artist added.

The 96th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will air live on Sunday, March 10, from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California, beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
