Billie Eilish has shared her belief that Lana Del Rey’s 2012 major label debut studio album, Born to Die, “changed music.”
In a recent appearance on Dua Lipa’s At Your Service podcast, Eilish was asked to name “five formative albums” that shaped her as a musician. “Born to Die by my girl Lana,” she said. “I feel that that album changed music. And especially changed music for girls and the potential of what is possible.”
Earlier this year, Eilish directly expressed her admiration for Del Rey and the impact of her music in an artist-on-artist feature published in Interview magazine. During their conversation, Eilish revealed that she used to sing Del Rey’s songs during talent shows. “I sang ‘Brooklyn Baby’ at the last one I did,” Eilish said. ” I’d film myself covering your songs and pretend that I was gonna blow up on YouTube from them, and then they’d get two views.”
In response, Del Rey gushed about Eilish’s innate ability. “I remember seeing the first videos of you singing and I said to my managers, ‘She’s the one,'” Del Rey told Eilish. “I was like, ‘This is the girl. She isn’t just talented. You can tell she’s kind.’ It didn’t feel like you were aspiring to be anything. It’s crazy to have that magical quality.”
Eilish is far from alone in public praising Del Rey’s influence. In March, Taylor Swift described her Midnights collaborator as “the best that we have” during a Las Vegas stop of her “Eras Tour.” “It’s so good… It’s just extraordinary,” Swift said about Del Rey’s latest album, Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd. “She’s the best that we have. I think we need to make it a priority, as a group, to stream, buy, support this album and this artist.”
Another one of Eilish’s formative albums was Childish Gambino’s Because the Internet, which she described as also “really, really” changing “how I viewed music and albums specifically.” She also named Justin Bieber’s Believe and Journals, as well as The Neighbourhood’s Wiped Out! as big influences.
