The year in music keeps heating up. Following new albums from the likes of Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Vampire Weekend and Taylor Swift, now Billie Eilish is throwing her hat back in the ring with her third studio album. She has announced that “Hit Me Hard and Soft” will be released on May 17. Watch the mysterious announcement video above.

Her first album made history. 2019’s “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” was the number-one album of the year on the Billboard 200. Then it swept the Grammys in 2020, claiming Album of the Year, Record and Song of the Year (both for “Bad Guy”) and Best New Artist. That made Eilish the youngest Album of the Year winner in history at just 18 years old. She also became the third artist to win all four of those categories, following Christopher Cross and Adele, and she was just the second artist to win them all in the same year, following Cross.

She followed that up in 2021 with “Happier Than Ever,” which also received critical acclaim and topped the Billboard 200, though it didn’t achieve the dominance of her first effort. It scored seven Grammy nominations including Album of the Year, but it didn’t win any. It could hardly be considered a sophomore slump, though, and she achieved landmark success even outside of her albums.

Her non-album single “Everything I Wanted” won her Record of the Year in 2021, making her the third artist to win that award two years in a row, following Roberta Flack and U2. Her theme song from the James Bond film “No Time to Die” won her and her brother Finneas the Oscar for Best Original Song, and their “Barbie” composition “What Was I Made For?” won both the Grammy for Song of the Year and the Oscar for Best Original Song, making them the two youngest double Oscar winners of all time.

So I’d ask whether the third time will be the charm for the young singer-songwriter, but it appears that every time has been charmed for her thus far. No pressure.
