Billie Eilish is in a class of her own when it comes to her fandom. While they're as dedicated as Swifties, Eilish tends to keep her private life significantly closer to the chest than Taylor Swift does, which leaves Eilish's lyrics more open for interpretation.
She did offer at least one clue, however: HIT ME HARD AND SOFT is very much about Eilish getting back to herself.
"I feel like this album is me," she told Rolling Stone of her new album. "It's not a character. It feels like the When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? version of me. It feels like my youth and who I was as a kid."

"SKINNY"
In "SKINNY," Eilish explores body image and her public perception, while also reflecting on falling in love "with a friend" when she was 21. Her boyfriend around that age was Jesse Rutherford, who she dated from around October 2022 to May 2023. Their split was actually confirmed on May 17, 2023, a year to the day before HIT ME HARD AND SOFT was released. Of course, that could be a coincidence...
"LUNCH"
Eilish gets borderline explicit in "LUNCH," a song she previously told Rolling Stone was about her realizing she was attracted to women.
"That song was actually part of what helped me become who I am, to be real," she said. "I wrote some of it before even doing anything with a girl, and then wrote the rest after. I've been in love with girls for my whole life, but I just didn't understand—until, last year, I realized I wanted my face in a vagina."
All that said, the song doesn't (yet) have one specific muse that's been revealed.

"CHIHIRO"
"CHIHIRO" is a reference to the heroine of the Studio Ghibli classic Spirited Away. The song itself references a breakup that Eilish thought was just a break.
"BIRDS OF A FEATHER"
"BIRDS OF A FEATHER" is a love song, pure and simple: Eilish serenades a partner who she wants to be with til death—and even after that.
"WILDFLOWER"
Eilish sings from the point of view of someone in a relationship with a friend's ex and the insecurity and guilt stemming from the romance.
"THE GREATEST"
A song of mostly unrequited love, Eilish reflects on making sacrifices for a partner she loves who won't do the same for her. The identity of said partner is ambiguous.
"L'AMOUR DE MA VIE"
Translated to "the love of my life," "L'AMOUR DE MA VIE" reflects on a partner who swore they loved her, then broke her heart and moved on almost immediately. Eilish's fans speculated that the track may be about Rutherford, who appeared to use the Grammy winner to raise his own profile.
"THE DINER"
Eilish sings from the point of view of a stalker—of which she's had plenty. It's eerie, it's urgent and it's on the nose. (And the phone number at the end, if called, will get you messages promoting her music.)
"BITTERSUITE"
A play on words and a track about longing, "BITTERSUITE" references several other songs on the album, including "BIRDS OF A FEATHER," "L'AMOUR DE MA VIE," "CHIHIRO" and "BLUE."
"BLUE"
In "BLUE," Eilish references every other song on HIT ME HARD AND SOFT except "THE DINER," and all within the first verse. The track is about missing an ex, likely Rutherford, as she references being blue as opposed to black and white—the latter of which is a frequent aesthetic for Rutherford's band The Neighborhood. She also sings of her insomnia, a struggle she's been open about for years.
