Billboard Music Awards announce 2023 revamp, promising ‘a fresh award show concept’

On October 19, Dick Clark Productions and Billboard have announced big changes to the annual Billboard Music Awards. According to the press release, “The BBMAs will roll out performances and awards across BBMAs and Billboard social channels, as well as via BBMAs.watch on Sunday, November 19.”

The awards will also partner with Spotify to identify music fans who have spent the most hours listening to music on the platform: “These fans will receive a ‘golden ticket’ granting them access to attend a once-in-a-lifetime performance curated by their favorite artists, expressly for the 2023 Billboard Music Awards.”

Maddy Mesevage, SVP of marketing for Dick Clark Productions, said in a statement, “We’ve heard the fans loud and clear, and we’re excited to meet them where they are, and everywhere they want to consume music and content. This year’s show is an epic celebration of the fans who propelled their favorite artists to the top of the Billboard charts. To thank them, we are thrilled to work with Spotify and the artists themselves to offer their most loyal fans an experience they’ll never forget.”

The BBMAs were previously held during the spring, but they have moved to the fall, and their eligibility period now aligns with Billboard’s year-end charts, which are determined based on music consumption from November 19, 2022 through October 21, 2023. Other popularity-based awards like the American Music Awards and MTV Video Music Awards are determined by fans voting online, but for the BBMAs, fans kinda vote year-round in the sense that the winners are based on record sales, streaming performance and radio airplay. Finalists and performers will be revealed at a later date.
