Billboard Awards Recap: Sexy Opening Number, Raw Performances, and a Prince Tribute

Sunday night’s Billboard Awards got started with a jaw-dropping, sexy performance from Millennium Award winner, Britney Spears. The pop star lip-synced her way through a medley of songs while grinding on a giant guitar and unenthusiastically dancing around the stage and a stripper pole.

The show was packed full of performances from stars like Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani, Nick and Joe Jonas, and Demi Lovato, who showed some support for the transgender community by wearing a top with a gender-neutral bathroom symbol on it.

Quite possibly the best performance in a night full of big showy spectacles was Kesha’s raw version of Bob Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe”. Standing on a stage in the middle of the crowd with just a piano and a violin, Kesha wowed the audience with a simple and honest performance which received a standing ovation. That act was a tough one to follow, but just a few minutes later, Rihanna was able to pull it off with a stripped-down performance of her hit, “Love On the Brain.”

The final hour of the show had a couple of emotional performances, starting with Celine Dion singing Queen’s “The Show Must Go On” before accepting the Icon Award from her son. While Madonna finished the evening with a Prince tribute where she was joined onstage by Stevie Wonder as everyone in the T-Mobile Arena sang “Purple Rain.”
