The first footage from director Rupert Sanders' upcoming remake shows "the original anti-superhero" out for bloody vengeance.

In the newest adaptation of The Crow, actor Bill Skarsgård stars as Eric Draven, a man who is resurrected to avenge his own death and that of his beloved fiancée, Shelley Webster (FKA Twigs). The new trailer shows both their happy relationship and their brutal murders at the hands of criminals led by Danny Huston's character.

When Draven comes back to life, armed with "the powers of a god," he does not hesitate to unleash gruesome violence on the people who ruined his happiness.

"I was a huge fan of the original film growing up as a kid and was so honored to take on the role of Eric Draven," Skarsgård said in a statement. "But really what drew me to it was what Rupert Sanders wanted to do with it. He wanted to completely reimagine the story and the character and tailor it towards a modern audience. It’s a character that I know many revere and have a strong connection to — he is unlike any I’ve ever taken on before. Working with the remarkably talented FKA Twigs was magical."

Sanders, who previously directed Snow White and the Huntsman and Ghost in the Shell, said that he wanted to pay homage to both O'Barr's original comic and Proyas' previous film while also making sure the material could speak to a new generation.

"The Crow is the original anti-superhero," Sanders said in a statement. "His story is about tragic loss, about dealing with the pain of everything that comes with losing someone you love, something that all of us have or will encounter at some point in our lives. It is about the dark shadow of grief, about what we would do when something so meaningful is taken from us."

The Crow hits theaters on June 7. Watch the trailer above, and check out photos from the film below.
