Rupert Sanders' upcoming take on the classic graphic novel revenge thriller hits theaters this summer.

Bill Skarsgård is back from the dead to avenge his true love's murder in new first-look photos of Rupert Sanders' The Crow, based on James O'Barr's graphic novel.

When the demons of Shelly Webster's (FKA Twigs) past catch up with her, she and her soulmate, Eric Draven (Skarsgård), are brutally killed. But Eric/The Crow is soon resurrected, seeking justice for those who slayed him and Shelly "to put the wrong things right," per the movie's synopsis.

Set to land in theaters this summer, the film, billed as a modern reimagining of O'Barr's graphic novel, also stars Danny Huston, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Isabella Wei.

The first two photos from it show Skarsgård and Twigs in romantic bliss, while the third previews Skarsgård's gothic Crow, covered in tattoos and sporting dark eye makeup.

“What drew me to this was the opportunity to make a dark romance, something that dealt with loss, grief, and the ethereal veil between life and death and reaching through that,” Sanders recently told Vanity Fair, discussing the role. "I grew up listening to Joy Division and the Cure, and this movie is a bit like a Cure song — the beauty of melancholy.”

Sanders' reimagining marks the fifth in a series of adaptations, the most notable being the 1994 film starring Brandon Lee, which was shrouded in tragedy during its production after Lee, the 28-year-old son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, died following a firearm malfunction on set.

Though his project is a different take from versions past, Sanders considers it a tribute to Lee's memory.

"Obviously, it was a terrible tragedy, and it’s definitely something that we’ve always had in mind through the making of the film,” he told Vanity Fair. “Brandon was an original voice and I think he will always be synonymous with The Crow. I hope he’s proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve brought the story back again. His soul is very much alive in this film."

The Crow flies into theaters June 7.
