Bill Murray stars in 'Groundhog Day'-inspired Super Bowl commercial

You simply can’t have a Super Bowl scheduled for Feb. 2, a.k.a. Groundhog Day, without getting Bill Murray and Punxsutawney Phil involved.

With hours to go before Super Bowl LIV’s showdown between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs kicks off, Jeep has released a buzzworthy — and seasonally appropriate — new ad which sees Murray reprising his role from the beloved 1993 time-loop comedy Groundhog Day.

The ad begins with Murray waking up in his hotel room to a familiar tune: Sonny and Cher’s “I Got You Babe,” followed by two jolly radio hosts bellowing, “It’s cold out there today!”

“Oh no,” Murray — who played cynical weatherman Phil Connors in the hit film — proclaims. “Oh no.”

Oh yes.

Out on the street, he’s once again hounded by persistent and perky insurance salesman Ned Ryerson (Stephen Tobolowsky). Just as Murray’s own actor brother, Brian Doyle Murray, who also appeared in the original film, emerges with a groundhog in his arms, the star notices a bright orange Jeep Gladiator.

“Well that’s different,” he says, before kidnapping the groundhog and speeding off.

Thus begins a snappy montage of adventures in the Jeep, day in and day out. While Murray/Connors and his furry friend are still trapped on Groundhog Day, their hot new wheels make the experience considerably more palatable.

The Super Bowl ad sees the pair enjoying some winter sports, but on Sunday the real Punxsutawney Phil assured the world that there will be an early spring. Who are we to argue?
