Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson Perform “Ghostbusters” Theme Song with Classroom Instruments on “The Tonight Show”

Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson reminisced on making 1984's 'Ghostbusters' ahead of the franchise's latest sequel 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,' in theaters Friday

The Ghostbusters are reuniting with a throwback to the iconic movie's theme song.

As Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire stars Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson gear up for the franchise's latest entry, the pair joined Jimmy Fallon and The Roots on The Tonight Show to perform "Ghostbusters," the titular theme song from the 1984 movie.

Ray Parker Jr., the musician who originally wrote and performed the song, also joined the group for a special rendition of the theme song performed with classroom instruments. Parker Jr. 69, Fallon, 49, Murray, 73, and Hudson, 78, each wore tan Ghostbusters suits bearing their names for the performance, and Murray could be seen blowing into a kazoo during the song.

He, Fallon and Hudson each clanked percussive instruments together for the performance, while Parker Jr. played a triangle while singing the song's lyrics.

Members of the Roots played along to the song using classroom-sized xylophones, bongos, a ukelele and a melodica, among others, and Slimer, the iconic green ghost from the 1984 movie, even makes an appearance at the end of the Ghostbusters-themed segment.

Murray and Hudson interrupted Fallon's monologue on Friday night's episode of The Tonight Show to chat with the late-night host about Frozen Empire, the fourth entry in their Ghostbusters film series and a sequel to the 2021 movie Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

During their appearance, Murray and Hudson spoke about the first moment they knew 1984's Ghostbusters would turn into a hit and looked back on filming the music video in New York City with Parker Jr.

"People didn't know what the hell we were doing there, and we just kept walking back and forth doing it and [people] thought - you know how there's a naked cowboy in Times Square? He was more interesting than we were," Murray joked.

"They were concerned about us, we just kept going like this and why were we dressed that way? But we knew what we had, so we just kept — we didn't care," he added.

The newest Ghostbusters film also features Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard, who were each introduced to the franchise in 2021's Afterlife. Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, Celeste O’Connor, James Acaster and Logan Kim also appear in the new movie, which follows the Ghostbusters, both new and old, fighting an enemy that emerges from an ancient artifact and threatens the entirety of N.Y.C.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is in theaters on March 22.
