Bill Maher on Trump’s Difficult Week: ‘The Gang That Couldn’t Do Treason Straight’

On Friday’s “Real Time,” Bill Maher spent his monologue talking about the difficult week for Donald Trump — and his acting chief of staff — joking that the Trump administration is “the gang that couldn’t do treason straight.”

First up, Maher talked about Trump’s decision to host next year’s G7 summit at a hotel he owns (a possible violation of the emoluments clause in the U.S. constitution).

Trump, Maher joked, is “committing more crimes” to distract people from the impeachment inquiry. “It’s like he comes home and Melania says ‘there’s lipstick on your collar’ and he goes ‘you should see my d—,” Maher added.

Maher then took a second to talk about Trump’s decision to withdraw American forces from Syria. “We just lost Syria. Syria’s now being taken over by Russia, Iran and ISIS. Trump has created the only place in the world that is more anti-American than Berkeley.”

Finally, Maher talked about the disastrous press conference held Thursday by acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney. During the briefing, Mulvaney was asked if Trump’s conversation with Ukraine’s president was “quid pro quo.” In response, he said outright that Trump tried to strong-arm Ukraine into investigating Joe Biden.

“The whole defense of the Ukrainian scandal is there was no quid pro quo,” Maher said. “Mulvaney gets up there yesterday and he says ‘oh yeah, quid pro quo. We are total quid pro quo people, that’s all we do all day.'”

Maher then noted that hours later, Mulvaney had to issue a follow-up statement that “there was absolutely no quid pro quo between Ukrainian military aid and any investigation into the 2016 election.”

“‘I’m sorry, you thought I said quid pro quo? I said tic tac toe,'” Maher joked. “They’re the gang that couldn’t do treason straight.”
