Bill Maher blames Trump’s base for all of his ‘winning’: 'It's a cult'

On Cuomo Prime Time Monday night, constant Trump critic Bill Maher actually agreed with something the president said while on the campaign trail: That he would win so much people would get sick of it. But Maher wasn’t referring to policy wins; he was talking about Trump’s seemingly unwavering support from his base, and his ability to shape multiple narratives in their eyes.

“What I never get about the Republican base is that they never catch on to the bait-and-switch,” Maher said. “That he’s this new kind of Republican but when he gets into office, what does he do? Tax cut for the rich people.”

Maher went on to question the narrative that Republicans are the party of national defense in the age of Trump.

“How do they win the narrative on being the party of national defense?” Maher asked. “I mean, Donald Trump is a guy who literally takes sides with countries that are not us. That may not technically be the definition of treason, but it’s good enough for me.”

Maher then had some harsh words for Trump supporters who consider themselves patriots, but continued to be loyal to the president following the debacle in Helsinki in July of last year when Trump sided with Putin over U.S. intelligence agencies.

When Chris Cuomo asked why Helsinki wasn’t enough to change how Trump’s base feels, Maher answered, “Because it’s a cult. It’s a great question. I ask it all the time. Why do Republicans get what I’ve called patriotic immunity? They can do anything and they’re not questioned.”

And that’s when Maher was forced to agree with Trump’s campaign trail assertion. Cuomo asked if he thinks Trump is winning, and Maher replied, “Yes, and I’m sick of winning. He’s right, I got sick of winning, his winning.”

Cuomo Prime Time airs weeknights at 9 p.m. on CNN.
