Bill Hader Went on a Weird Date with Judd Apatow to Get ‘Trainwreck’ Role

In Trainwreck, Bill Hader plays a sports doctor who falls for a commitment-averse Amy Schumer. It’s his first outing as a romantic-comedy leading man — and he had to jump through a few hoops to land the role. In this interview with Yahoo Movies, Hader describes going on a “date” with Schumer and director Judd Apatow as part of his audition. Watch it above!

When he first read for Trainwreck, Hader tells Yahoo Movies, “I thought I bombed it.” Still, he agreed to come to New York for a screen test. And that’s when Apatow decided to give him a night on the town.

“Judd Apatow took me and Amy on like, a date,” says the former SNL star. “He watched us eat dinner and took pictures of us while we ate dinner. It was very strange.”

After the meal, Apatow escorted Schumer and Hader to a premiere party for HBO’s Girls, where Hader got an all-important endorsement from Girls creator and star Lena Dunham. “We went to the Girls Season 3 premiere party and he was walking around going, ‘Hey Lena, do you think you would buy them as a couple?’” recalls Hader. “She was like, ‘Yes!’”

Trainwreck opens in theaters on July 17. Watch a trailer below.
