Biil Maher Asks: ‘Do Republicans Still Believe in Democracy?’

Bill Maher didn’t pull any punches when talking about the GOP on his Friday night political talk show “Real Time,” asking if the Republican party even believes in democracy anymore.

The comedian kicked off a roundtable discussion by quoting a line from a new campaign video on Facebook in which Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he is the one man who can end the House’s impeachment inquiry of President Trump.

“The way that impeachment stops is a Senate majority, with me as Majority Leader,” McConnell said in the video.

“It sounds like he’s saying it doesn’t really matter what Donald Trump did or does, ‘I will stop it,” Maher said, interpreting McConnell’s comment. “My first question is, do Republicans still believe in democracy?”

The sound of silence from the panel — “The Federalist” publisher (and Meghan McCain’s husband) Ben Domenech, “The Circus” host John Heilemann and Vice News DC bureau chief Shawna Thomas — was deafening and was only interrupted by a spattering of “oooo” in the studio audience.

Maher further explained the point he was trying to make.

“Democracy in the sense, when the Benghazi hearings were going on, Democrats thought they were ‘very unfair’ and they were ‘being nasty,'” Maher said, mocking some on the left. “But they still showed up! Because when you get a subpoena, you showed up. Now we’re in this phase of government by ‘Make me. I’m just not doing it!'”

“That, to me, seems like they don’t believe in democracy anymore,” he said.

A day after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced her support for an impeachment inquiry, McConnell’s campaign released Facebook ads, one which said, “Pelosi is obsessed with impeaching President Trump. And your conservative Senate Majority is the ONLY THING standing in her way.”

A couple of days later, the video was attached to the ads.

As of Oct. 10, an average of impeachment polls calculated by polling analysis website FiveThirtyEight shows 49.3% of respondents supporting impeachment and 43.5% not supporting it.
