The Biggest Premier League Summer Transfers for the 2023-24 Season To Date

If you were literally any other EPL team last season, save for maybe Arsenal, watching the Erling Haaland-led, thunderous stampede of Manchester City’s goalscoring machines trounce the rest of the league was the type of gut punch that, if the initial blow doesn’t obliterate your soul, the subsequent tidal wave despair surely will.

Yeah, it’s that bad, but let’s forget about the disheartened for now. How does one reckon with such a potent attack like the Citizens? Well, if you’re not ready to throw in the towel and declare Pep Guardiola’s force a dynasty, leveling the playing field through procuring top-tier talent is a surefire way to close the gap. Still, to do that requires clubs to crack open the piggy bank because, whether it’s Christopher Nkunku, Declan Rice or Mason Mount, the best of the best require a club’s war chest.

So, we thought we'd take a look at the biggest transfers the Summer League has seen to date:

Declan Rice: To Arsenal, From West ham

After the Gunners’ title collapse last season, Mikel Arteta is licking his chops after finally securing the man who could potentially elevate Arsenal to the promised land. What does Rice do so well? Simple – everything. Aside from his unparalleled passing, according to Goal, he’s ranked in the top nine players for the most completed tackles and, with his nearly 2.25 dribbles that extend 10 yards are more, he’s central to building attacks. Considering Arsenal is dishing out a club record of $135 million in a five-year-deal for the Englishman, they’ll expect that yield substantial results.

“You only ever get one career, and I really believe in what Mikel is building here and the squad he’s building,” Rice revealed, according to The Athletic. “I’m really looking forward to the future with Arsenal. For me as a player, I’ve come here really hungry to have more success and to spend my best years at this great club.”

Dominik Szoboszlai: To Liverpool, From RB Leipzig

Following the signing of Alexis Mac Allister, the Hungarian Szoboszlai becomes the Reds’ second summer signing. In addition to his extremely high work rate, the 22-year-old will bring a wealth of creativity and technique to Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

“[Liverpool’s a] really historic club, really good players, good coach, everything is good,” he said in his in his team debut. “For me it was perfect to make the next step in a club like this. The fans, the stadium, everything is really good.

Mason Mount: To Manchester City, From Chelsea

The 24-year-old English phenom officially became Erik ten Hag’s first new signing of the summer when the Red Devils acquired Mount for roughly $69.4 million with another $6.3 million in add-ons, but even that seems like a small price to pay for such a gifted pitch wizard as Mount. He’ll wear the iconic No. 7 on his kit for Man United, the same number worn by the legends of Old Trafford like David Beckham, George Best and Cristiano Ronaldo.

“I am hugely ambitious,” noted Mount, according to the Daily Mail. “I know how amazing it feels to win major trophies and what it takes to do it. I will be giving everything to experience that again at Manchester United.'

Kai Havertz: To Arsenal, From Chelsea

After graduating from Bayer Leverkusen's youth academy, the 24-year-old German has made a name for himself as a reliable, composed force in the air, scoring three of his seven league goals for the Blues last season off headers. Now that the Gunners have signed him for, according to Sky Sports, $83.7 million over five years, Havertz look to help bolster his reputation after arguably under performing at Stamford Bridge.

"The aim is to win trophies, and I'm going to give everything to do that for the supporters and everyone at the club.

Sandro Tonali: To Newcastle, From AC Milan

Earning the title of the Magpies most expensive signing in the era of Eddie Howe, the Italian midfielder will earn nearly a reported $7.7 million per season plus add-ons in a five-year deal. The 23-year-old is as durable as they come, remaining injury free during his time at Milan.

"First of all, I want to thank Newcastle United because they are giving me a huge opportunity for my career. I want to repay the trust on the pitch, giving it my all, as I always have. I'm really excited about playing at St. James' Park, I can't wait to feel the warmth of the fans," Tonali said in a statement obtained by CBS.

Christopher Nkunku: To Chelsea, From RB Leipzig

The Blues acquired the French forward for a fee of roughly $67 million, according to Sky Sports. Locked to a six-year deal at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea hopes that the 25-year-old Nkunku can be just as lethal of scorer for years to come as he was for RB Leipzig last season, notching 16 goals and six assists in 25 games.

"I am incredibly happy to be joining Chelsea," gushed Nkunku. "A big effort was made to bring me to the club and I am looking forward to meeting my new coach and team-mates and showing the Chelsea supporters what I can do on the pitch.”
