Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker is kicking off a new solo era. Today, she’s shared a new song titled “Ruined,” confirmed that a full solo album is on the way, and announced a run of European shows.
“Ruined” finds Lenker at the piano, laying down a steady march of reflective chords underneath an emotional vocal melody. As the dynamics build, she lays bare on the chorus: “So much comin’ through/ every hour or two/ Can’t get enough of you/ You come around I’m ruined.”
Speaking about the single, Lenker said: “This song has been a quiet beacon for me. It may contain the essence of the gift of romantic love but it’s mostly about something much bigger.” The song arrives alongside a music video utilizing shots of Lenker frolicking in autumnal foliage, directed by her brother, Noah Lenker. Lenker has also announced that a solo album “will be coming in 2024,” but no further details are available at this time. Her first solo album, Stages of the Sun, arrived in 2006, a decade before Big Thief’s first release. Her latest solo project, the joint release Songs and Instrumentals, dropped in October 2020.
Other than dropping her new album, Lenker is also set to tour in 2024. Sadly for the people of Burlington, her only North American date currently on the books is a set at Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee on March 21st. After that, she’ll hop across the pond to Europe for a 15-date tour with support from Ellie O’Neill, Nick Hakim, and Twain. As for Big Thief, they’ve released two singles this year: “Born for Loving You” and “Vampire Empire,” the latter of which was named Consequence’s Song of the Week.
