Big Daddy Kane apparently isn’t fond of Drake’s fan base, as the Hip-Hop icon blames the hitmaker’s loyalists with taking the fun out of rap battles.

During an interview with the Art of Dialogue, the Brooklyn native weighed in on the lyrical duel between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, which is currently among the hottest topics in music. According to Kane, Drake’s fans’ fixation on the validity of Kendrick’s slights against Drake are ruining the battle and taking away from the brilliance at hand.

“It’s not a competitive thing about who spit the better bars it’s a thing about fact checking to see if this person told the truth,” Kane said of Drake’s fans’ appraisal of the battle. “If the line is dope and he dissed you, it’s dope man. It’s that simple. He bodied you with what he said.”

The Juice Crew member harkened back to his own days as a renowned battle rapper, admitting that he sometimes fabricated claims about his opponents in his lyrics. “In my days of battling people, I said stuff that wasn’t true,” Kane added.

The “Smooth Operator” went on to urge fans to simply “enjoy the music for what it is,” reiterating his disenchantment with modern rhyme wars. “If that’s the way the younger generation looks at battles, good for them. It’s not about Kendrick or Drake. Their comments and their views, they make it unenjoyable for me.”

A true pioneer, Big Daddy Kane added that he’d rather listen to battles from the previous decades than to indulge in the discourse surrounding Drake, Kendrick, and other rival rap artists. “I’ll go back and listen to Bizzy Bee and Kool Moe Dee,” the 55-year-old quipped. “You can have this sh*t.”
