Big Daddy Kane has reimagined a modern version of the iconic posse cut “Self Destruction,” with some of the top rappers of today appearing on the remake.

During an appearance on the 85 South Show in December 2023, the Brooklyn native was asked by the hosts which current stars he would choose to contribute to an updated take on the original, which was released by the Stop the Violence Movement in 1989.

According to Kane — who didn’t contribute to the song, but appeared in the accompanying music video — his fantasy “Self Destruction” lineup would consist of Lil Baby, Kendrick Lamar, and either Offset or Quavo.

“For one I would definitely want one of the Migos,” he said of the trio, which lost member Takeoff in a shooting incident in 2022. “Due to circumstances [of Takeoff’s death], I would definitely want one of the Migos on there.”

After picking Lil Baby, the Juice Crew member rounded out the list with Kendrick Lamar, whom he lauded for his sociopolitical commentary. “I think he’s amazing at those type of issues, when it comes to approaching those types [of songs].”

Big Daddy Kane has been gratuitous in his praise of younger emcees throughout his career, a trend that has only continued in recent years. During an interview on Houston’s 97.9 The Box, the hitmaker expressed his adoration for the Migos and being saddened by the death of Takeoff.

“I was so hoping and praying to see another Migos album because their style reminded me of The Funky 4 + 1 with their in-and-out, and I’m a fan of their music and their fashion,” he said of QuavoOffset, and Takeoff. “Because that’s something that’s important to me. Those dudes be fly.”

Kane has also spoke glowingly of rapper J. Cole, deeming him his “hero” and his “favorite MC” today.

“That’s my dude right there. J. Cole is my hero,” he shared, also showing love to Kendrick and a few female MCs as well. “I love Kendrick [Lamar] as well. Rapsody, Lady London. Lady London is a monster. She is incredible.”
