When it comes to soul, Rochester has it. And in August, the city celebrates it.
The 27th annual Rochester Summer Soul Music Festival happens over two days and brings big R&B and hip-hop acts to the Flower City. It takes place Friday, Aug. 18, and Saturday, Aug. 19, on Parcel 5 in downtown Rochester.

In no particularly order, here's a bit more on four of the ROC Summer Soul Fest artists and when they are expected to perform.
ROC Summer Soul Fest 2023: Big Daddy Kane
Many marked Aug. 11 as the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, tracing its start to a party in the Bronx. Among the pioneering artists who have contributed to the genre is Big Daddy Kane.
Antonio Hardy, who goes by Big Daddy Kane, released his first solo studio album in 1988, "Long Live the Kane." After that, his career took off. The New York City rapper's hits include "Ain't No Half Steppin,'" and "Smooth Operator."
Big Daddy Kane is expected to perform at ROC Summer Soul Fest on Friday.

ROC Summer Soul 2023: Yo-Yo
This rapper and actress from Compton, California, has a music career that spans more than three decades.
Yo-Yo, the stage name for Yolanda Whitaker, has released four studio albums, and her biggest commercial solo song is arguably "You Can't Play with My Yo-Yo," which features Ice Cube. (Before that, she was featured in Ice Cube's "It's A Man's World.")
Yo-Yo is expected to perform at ROC Summer Soul Fest on Friday.

ROC Summer Soul 2023: Silk
R&B group Silk hails from Atlanta and had a string of hits in the 1990s, including their first major single "Freak Me." Though group members have changed over the years, Silk is still known for its smooth, romantic jams and live vocals.
Silk is expected to perform at ROC Summer Soul Fest on Saturday.

ROC Summer Soul 2023: Kid 'n Play
This Hip-Hop two-some is known for its fun music and movies, as their stage name suggests.
First, let's get a refresher on the who is who. Kid is Christopher Reid. Play is Christopher Martin. They've stayed together on and off over the years, and have become pop culture icons. (Kid's towering hi-top fade will never be forgotten. Never.)
Together, Kid 'n Play released three albums and co-starred in five feature films, most of them for the "House Party" franchise.
Kid 'n Play are expected to perform at ROC Summer Soul Fest on Saturday.
