Big Brother Recap: Did Jag Manage to Avoid Eviction for a Second Time? And Who’s the New Head of Household?

Big Brother always reminds us to expect the unexpected, and there’s nothing more unexpected than two straight weeks of potentially meaningless gameplay.

First, Cameron’s entire Head of Household reign was rendered moot when Matt opted to use the Power of Invincibility last week, saving Jag from eviction and ensuring that no one would leave the house. But heading into this week’s eviction, the effort to save Jag appeared to have been wasted, as he found himself right back on the nomination block and poised to walk out the door for real.

But did Jag find a way to evade eviction yet again? Read on for the details of Thursday’s live broadcast:

THE STRATEGY | Following the Power of Veto meeting, Jag truly believes he’s just a pawn to facilitate Red’s eviction, and that’s exactly what Jared and his allies want Jag to believe. But Operation Blindside Jag is in full swing, to the point that Cirie actually gathers and leads a meeting of Legend 25 — which includes Red, mind you! — to solidify their allegiance (or is it “allegiance”?) to each other once more.

But the mood starts to change when Red goes up to the HOH bedroom to have a conversation with Jared, where he once again questions the exact chain of events that led him to sit on the block next to Cameron at the start of the week. He also suggests that, although he’s been ignoring Cameron ever since Cameron stabbed him in the back, there’s an opportunity for the two of them to reconcile if they both remain in the house after Eviction Night. And by the time the conversation ends, Jared has once again soured on Red, worrying that he and Cameron might decide to work together again, even though their ride-or-die friendship appears to have frayed in recent days. Jared takes this concern to Felicia and Izzy, and Felicia relays it to Cirie; all of them seem to agree that Cameron and Red reteaming strategically would be bad news…

THE EVICTION | …and those concerns (along with some other, newer developments that we don’t get a chance to see on Thursday’s episode) are reflected in the house vote, which isn’t unanimous for the first time this season. Red is ultimately evicted by a vote of 8-2 — only Cameron and Bowie vote to keep him — and Cameron is completely stunned by the news. Behold:

In his post-game chat with Julie Chen Moonves, Red says he ultimately feels most betrayed by Cam, as Cam played a huge role in Red being nominated in the first place. But he also suspects Felicia had a lot to do with his ultimate eviction, and he might be onto something there: When Felicia cast her vote to boot Red earlier, she remarked, “Based on recent intel, I gladly vote to evict Red.” Not sadly! Gladly! The intrigue!

THE HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD COMPETITION | And hey, here’s something else unexpected: a Head of Household competition that actually unfolds during the eviction episode! That’s become increasingly rare in recent Big Brother seasons, and it’s a treat to get a new HOH in real time.

This week’s competition is an old-school one, in which houseguests stand in cubicles and answer true-or-false questions about video footage they’ve just watched. And, well, yikes: Cameron becomes the new Head of Household in the end, with Izzy and Cory falling just short of the win. But even though Cameron’s victory is probably a delicious bit of vengeance for him, the vibe in the backyard couldn’t be more uncomfortable after he wins. The houseguests give him some polite golf claps, but no one gets up to hug him, and Jared doesn’t even pass off the HOH bedroom key. “Uh… I’ll celebrate!” Cameron eventually says, shooting an awkward thumbs-up to the camera while everyone else sits, stony-faced. Well, this will be an interesting week indeed.

OK, your turn. Were you surprised to see Red leave the house over Jag? And how do you feel about Cameron claiming the power once again? Hit the comments!
