The COVID-19 lockdown is putting moms and expecting moms everywhere in positions they never thought they’d be in, from homeschooling while working full-time jobs to preparing for labor without their partner in the room. For The Big Bang Theory star Melissa Rauch, who was pregnant with husband Winston Beigel’s second child, the issue wasn’t that Beigel wouldn’t be permitted in the delivery room. But he had to watch their 2-year-old daughter Sadie, since the family had been self-isolating together and had no other options for childcare. So, Rauch welcomed new baby son Brooks on her own (and with healthcare professionals), while Beigel FaceTimed in for encouragement. A totally modern birth story — and Rauch’s heartwarming account of how it went down will have you tearing up.

Rauch celebrated Brooks’ arrival by sharing a photo of a little baby blue hat adorned with his name. “I am incredibly thankful and overjoyed to announce the birth of our son, Brooks Rauch, who we just welcomed into the world and directly into our hearts,” she wrote. “His arrival was made possible, in no small part, by the front line heroes — the nurses and doctors who show up each day to make sure that life keeps marching forward, regardless of the circumstances.”

In an essay for Glamour, Rauch got into more detail about how she ended up at the hospital alone: “Although the hospital I was delivering at did allow birth partners, my husband had to stay home with our daughter since our original plan of having family come to town — as well as our backup plans — were no longer options due to COVID-19.”

While Rauch is honest about the fact that she wished for her husband at times, she found a hard truth while giving birth: no matter what’s going on around you, the labor will always be your focus.

“No matter what is going down, when one human is coming out of another human it becomes the main focus — there’s no other choice,” she wrote. “No pandemic, or fear of being alone, or anger over not having a partner there to bitch-slap through the whole hellish gauntlet of labor gets airtime. I had a job to do. The nurses, the doctor, and my husband (who joined on FaceTime to see the birth of our son) ultimately made me feel safe and protected.”

Rauch didn’t expect this to be what Brooks’ birth looked like, and she wasn’t shy about letting herself feel that disappointment. It doesn’t negate how ecstatic she is about her new baby, and how special his birth was for the whole family.

“Words can’t describe how grateful I am to have this baby boy join our family,” Rauch gushes. “Please know you are in my heart and I’m sending you so much love.”
