“Big Bang Theory” prequel “Young Sheldon” to end with season 7

The popular sitcom will conclude in May with a one-hour finale.

Young Sheldon will soon be bazingone.

CBS announced Tuesday that the popular prequel to The Big Bang Theory will conclude its run with its upcoming seventh season. Young Sheldon's final season will premiere Feb. 15, 2024, and bid audiences adieu with a one-hour finale on May 16.

The show stars Iain Armitage as the adolescent version of Jim Parsons' Big Bang Theory protagonist, Sheldon Cooper, and follows his escapades as a child prodigy in East Texas in the 1980s and '90s. Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Annie Potts, Montana Jordan, and Raegan Revord costar as various members of Sheldon's family. Parsons also provides narration as adult Sheldon.

Parsons originally conceived the idea for Young Sheldon and brought it to the Big Bang Theory producers. The series premiered on CBS in 2016, airing on the same night as The Big Bang Theory for that show's 11th and 12th seasons, and quickly became one of the most watched comedies on broadcast television.

Executive producers Steve Holland, Steven Molaro, and Chuck Lorre said in a statement Thursday, "Being able to tell the origin of Sheldon Cooper, and expanding the story to include the entire Cooper family has been a wonderful experience. We are grateful to our fans for embracing this chapter of the Coopers these past six seasons, and on behalf of the entire Young Sheldon family, we're excited to share this final season with you."

Armitage also posted in appreciation for the show's crew on social media, writing, "Thank you, fantastic crew members- and thank you, Young Sheldon crew. We love you and we are grateful to you."
