Although he claims the period he spent touring and writing songs "helped keep him out of the big time," he clearly had some talent for it—he wrote Debbie Harry’s 1986 song "French Kissin’ in the USA," which reached No. 57 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Lorre was on the road for over a decade before pivoting to work in television. He began by writing animation scripts and producing the themes and scores for series like The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987). After dabbling in a few smaller sitcoms, in 1988 he landed the role of supervising producer on the hit show Roseanne.
