BFI to Release Newly Restored 4K ‘Doctor Zhivago’
LONDON — The British Film Institute is to re-release David Lean’s epic romance “Doctor Zhivago,” which starred Omar Sharif and Julie Christie, to coincide with the film’s 50th anniversary.
The movie will run in U.K. theaters on Nov. 27 as part of the BFI’s Love season in a newly restored 4K digital version. Love, which runs from October to December, is dedicated to love stories in films and television shows.
“Doctor Zhivago,” which is based on the novel by Boris Pasternak, won five Academy Awards. It is set against the backdrop of the Russian Revolution. In Moscow on the eve of World War I, medical student Yuri Zhivago (Sharif) meets the beautiful Lara (Christie), setting in motion a fateful romance that turns their lives upside down. The movie also stars Tom Courtenay, Geraldine Chaplin and Alec Guinness.
The BFI’s re-release of “Doctor Zhivago” continues the organization’s partnership with Warner Bros., which has seen big-screen returns for such titles as “Blade Runner: The Final Cut,” “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “The Shining.” These ran as part of past BFI seasons, Sci-Fi and Gothic.
