Beyoncé is referred to as the queen for many reasons. Off the top of our heads, she has put out six No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, scored seven No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, picked up 28 Grammy Awards, headlined five massively successful concert tours and has sold a couple hundred million records in her two-decade-plus career.

But what was the unifying factor in all those achievements? She looked fantastic doing them.

Even back to her Destiny’s Child days — during which her mother Tina Knowles created bright, matching stage ensembles for her and her bandmates  — Bey has always been kicking ass and taking names wherever fashion is concerned. Between the bejeweled mini-dresses she wore as a young star, the curve-hugging ball gowns she became known for on red carpets and the leggy bodysuits she made the standard for onstage costume wear, the “Break My Soul” blockbuster musician has managed to develop a style that stands out as much as it perfectly matches her elegant, polished and quietly powerful personality.

The power of style and the significance of her own fashion prowess are both things Queen B herself acknowledged back in 2016, when she was awarded the year’s Council of Fashion Designers of America fashion icon award. “My mother actually designed my wedding dress, my prom dress, my first CFDA Awards dress, my first Grammy dress, and the list goes on and on,” she said in her acceptance speech. “This to me is the true power and potential of fashion. It’s a tool for finding your own identity, expression, and strength. It transcends style and is a time capsule of all of our greatest milestones.”

From teen pop star to classy — and sometimes flashy — style icon, keep reading to see the evolution of Beyoncé’s style through the years.
