The apple definitely doesn’t fall too far from the tree! At only 7, Blue Ivy Carter is now an award-winning songwriter. Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s talented daughter was recognized at the 2019 BET Soul Train Awards on Sunday for her contribution to her mom’s The Lion King: The Gift album — and, suffice it to say, Bey and Jay must be super-proud of their little scion.

Blue Ivy took home the Ashford & Simpson Songwriter’s Award for co-writing her mom’s track “Brown Skin Girl,” which also features Nigerian singer Wizkid and Guyanese artist Saint John (Beyoncé and Jay-Z also received a co-writing credit). In the song, which celebrates dark- and brown-skinned women, Blue Ivy sings: “Brown skin girl, your skin just like pearls, the best thing in the world, never trade you for anybody else.” In the rest of its lyrics, the empowering anthem shouts-out to powerful role models like Lupita Nyong’o, Naomi Campbell and Beyoncé’s former Destiny’s Child member and best friend Kelly Rowland — some of whom took to social media after the song’s release for the #BrownSkinGirlChallenge, which embraced the song’s message.

Not surprisingly, the song was critically and publicly well-received, landing on the Billboard Hot 100 upon its release.

In the past year, Beyoncé and Jay-Z have started sharing more of their daughter’s artistic talent. In June, after a video of the girl killing it at a dance recital went viral, sources reported that Blue’s famous parents were “ready and willing to do anything” to help fulfill their daughter’s dreams of being a performer. “Beyoncé and Jay-Z really nurture her talent,” one source told HollywoodLife, noting that Blue Ivy has been in dance class since she was a toddler and often spends time in the studio with her mom and dad.

That budding talent was definitely on display when Blue Ivy appeared in the music video for “Spirit,” another track from Beyoncé’s Lion King album. The internet lost its collective mind over just how much poise, grace and screen presence the young girl exhibited.

So, really, it was only a matter of time before Blue Ivy officially stepped into her power as an artist. Granted, we thought she might at least be in double digits, but we can’t say we’re surprised that Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s daughter is already breaking the mold.
