In Beverly Hills, the Mandarin Oriental Residences Emerge As a Sanctuary for the Stars

When Michelle Yeoh was in Hollywood for the Oscars earlier this month, the history-making Academy Award-winning actress chose a similarly storied property for her stay.

Yeoh and her team spent the week at the Mandarin Oriental Residences Beverly Hills, an A-list sanctuary that has quietly become a sought-after stay in town for celebrities and high-end clientele alike. Combining the amenities of a luxury auberge with the intimacy of a private home, the property bills itself as the “best of both worlds,” noting that it offers “all the legendary services of a great hotel, with none of the guests.”

For Yeoh, the Mandarin Oriental Residences have become her home away from home, having hosted the “Everything Everywhere All At Once” star for her Oscars stay last year as well, in addition to multiple parties feting her award season wins. Yeoh captured the sentiment perfectly in a recent post to Instagram, calling the serene property, “My oasis in LA.”

Officially opened in December 2022, the Mandarin Oriental Residences are the hotel group’s first branded residences on the West Coast, offering 54 units that range from one to four bedrooms, to a sprawling two-storey penthouse suite — where Yeoh usually stays — complete with private infinity pool and wraparound deck overlooking postcard views of the Hollywood Hills.

Designed by architects MVE + Partners, the minimalist building is also the first new condominium in Beverly Hills in more than a decade, taking over a full city block on Wilshire Boulevard, just steps from Rodeo Drive and the area’s most iconic shops (indeed, residents at the Mandarin Oriental have access to a dedicated stylist, as well as private after-hours shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue down the street, thanks to a partnership with the legendary department store).

Residents also have access to Chef Daniel Boulud’s first West Coast restaurant, Café Boulud, scheduled to open on the ground level later this spring. For now, the Michelin-star chef and his team are holding court in the residents-only rooftop dining lounge, which offers weekend brunch and weekly happy hours. Boulud’s team can also be booked for private in-unit dining, where dedicated butlers will greet guests with a champagne service, followed by tasting menus that include dishes like Boulud’s signature duo de boeuf, and other French favorites.

The feeling of warmth extends to the interiors, led by UK-based design firm, 1508 London, who have curated a tonal palette that highlights the towering ceilings and sophisticated architecture. Details like marbled walls, freestanding Kaldewei soaking tubs and custom Molteni kitchens add texture and a touch of opulence to the dreamy, light-filled space. An especially nice touch: mini bonsei gardens planted in select suites.

In a press release, Mandarin Oriental says the property is “seamlessly merging Asian influences inspired by Mandarin Oriental, with relaxed Southern California living.”

The SoCal influence is perhaps most apparent on the building’s rooftop, which features a 40-foot pool, private cabanas, on-demand spa, and private yoga studio, in addition to a top-of-the-line gym. Set among lush greenery and open-air, 360-degree views, the vibe is decidedly unhurried — just as the property intended.

While the Mandarin Oriental Residences and its amenities — which also include a steam room, meeting spaces, library and 24-hour concierge — will eventually be a residents-only affair, the space has played host to a number of high-profile guests in recent months aside from Yeoh.

Just the other week, Balmain Creative Director, Olivier Rousteing, held a private presentation of his Spring/Summer 2024 collection in one of the property’s two penthouses, giving guests an up-close-and-personal look at the couture pieces; Arianna Debose hosted a lunch in January to honor Eva Longoria’s directorial debut film, Flamin Hot, drawing the likes of Jessica Alba, Julianne Hough and Jeannie Mai; and Salma Hayek and Kristen Stewart hosted a party for Penelope Cruz in December, in honor of Cruz’s role in Ferrari. The latter two events took over the Mandarin Oriental Residences’ rooftop lounge, a light-filled indoor/outdoor space that can be customized for lavish parties and private appointments alike.

Units at the Mandarin Oriental Residences in Beverly Hills were developed by SHVO, who also represent the Mandarin Oriental Residences Fifth Avenue in New York City. In a press release, SHVO calls the Beverly Hills property a “new paradigm” both in “luxury condominium living” and “hotel-inspired living,” adding that the residences are “encompassing the legendary amenities and five-star service of a Mandarin Oriental, with the added security and privacy of a residential-only building.”

While the firm is mum on the building’s current residents — discretion is the most important thing in this town after all — reps note that owners include everyone from athletes and entertainers, to executives and international travelers looking for their pied a terre on the West Coast. The building also offers a number of turnkey residences, complete with curated furniture by 1508 London (or B&B Italia, pictured below), Frette sheets, Georg Jensen silverware and more.

“In partnership with Mandarin Oriental, we are creating one of the most exclusive residential properties in the heart of Beverly Hills,” offers Michael Shvo, Founder, Chairman and CEO of SHVO. “Having been a frequent guest at Mandarin Oriental properties globally, I appreciate and value their services, amenities and high attention to detail they bring to the guest experience. I’m thrilled to be able to offer the Mandarin Oriental experience exclusively to owners in a boutique residential setting.”

Remaining units at the Mandarin Oriental Residences Beverly Hills currently start at $2.9 million for a one-bedroom. See more details here.
