Eddie Murphy's Axel Foley is officially reporting for duty once again, as the much-delayed Beverly Hills Cop 4 is moving ahead, this time on Netflix.

After years of delays and lots of speculation, with the last update coming in the form of two new directors signing up for the film in 2016, Deadline now reports that Paramount has struck a one-time license deal with Netflix to release the fourth outing on the streaming service.

Jerry Bruckheimer is on-board as producer, while Murphy will reprise his role as wise-cracking cop Axel too.

There's also an option for a sequel, so if Beverly Hills Cop 4 does well we could also be getting a Beverly Hills Cop 5 too – and we probably won't have to wait 25 years (and counting) for it either.

The deal will see Netflix work with Murphy and Bruckheimer to make the movie, including finding scribes, a director and financing for the project, before ultimately releasing it on the streaming service.

It's not the first time that Paramount has worked with the streaming service either, as Netflix released Paramount's The Cloverfield Paradox in 2018, as well as acquiring the offshore rights to Alex Garland's Annihilation with Natalie Portman.

Meanwhile, Murphy is currently earning praise for his role in Netflix film Dolemite is My Name, and he's been heavily tipped to make his stand-up comeback on the service too.

Beverly Hills Cop was first released in 1984 and spawned two sequels, which were released in 1987 and 1994.

As well as the major films, the franchise was also adapted for TV as a procedural starring Brandon T Jackson as Axel Foley's son – although it never made it past the pilot stage.
