BET Awards Recap: Performances, Reunions, Tributes, and Remy Ma

Bruno Mars got the party started at the BET Awards, which was four hours of performances, reunions, tributes, and a few awards. A good portion of that time was spent celebrating New Edition, which received the Lifetime Achievement Award and hit the stage to sing a couple hits. New Edition wasn’t the only onstage reunion; the ladies from Xscape also got back together to “Just Kick It” one more time.

Other memorable performances included Mary J. Blige, Best Group winners Migos, Tamar Braxton, and SZA, who had a bit of a false start. There was something clearly wrong at the beginning of her performance, as SZA started singing but the stage was still dark. The host of the show, Leslie Jones, still had a mic in her hand, and she stalled for a minute until they were ready.

BET Tributes

There were also tribute performances to Chuck Berry and George Michael, while Lil’ Kim and Mobb Deep’s Havoc had a message for his partner Prodigy, who died just last week. Havoc said, “This loss is painful, but the legacy he left with us will impact us forever. Rest in peace, Prodigy, my brother.”

The BET Awards also honored Chance the Rapper with the Humanitarian Award, which got a stamp of approval from Michelle Obama. The former first lady said, “We are so incredibly proud of you, Chance. We have known Chance and his family since he was a wee little baby rapper.”

Fuel to the Feud

While most of the night was a laid-back celebration, they saved the drama for the end. Remy Ma won Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, which has been Nicki Minaj‘s award for the past seven years. Considering that Remy Ma’s song “SHEther” was a diss track directed at Minaj, this will only add fuel to their feud.
