BET Awards Recap: Artists Get Political

The 2016 BET Awards were Sunday evening, and because this is an election year, it comes as no surprise that things got political. While the show had several wonderful Prince tribute performances, it also had several stars making political statements.

The celebrities discussed everything from the upcoming election to gun control. Samuel L. Jackson warned that if people didn’t get out and vote, the U.S. could have it’s own Brexit situation to deal with.

But the most politically charged speech came from Jesse Williams, who had a lot to say about the current status of African Americans in the United States. He said, “We’re done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight, and out of mind, while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil, black gold, ghetto-izing and demeaning our creations and stealing them, gentrifying our genius and then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit.”
