Too many films take place on Earth. Romantic comedies, political thrillers, alien invasions—they're all more exciting on other planets. I don't want to think about what would happen to me if Godzilla hit New York City. Show me galactic spectacles, planetary explosions, and stakes that threaten the very fabric of the universe! If it's not off-world, I'm getting off-couch. (Anything there?)

In 2024, audiences have been sent to the desert planet of Arrakis in Dune: Part Two, full of warring families, prophesies, and giant sandworms. Viewers have also returned to Mad Max's Fury Road, a Planet of the Apes, an inner-crust of the Earth where Godzilla and King Kong exchange punches, and the outer reaches of Jupiter with Adam Sandler. Thrills, each and every one of them.

For the best sci-fi films of 2024 (so far), check below. We'll keep this list updated as new treasure arrive.

Dune: Part Two

Timothée Chalamet's desert prince, Paul Atreides, returns in Dune: Part Two, the second installment of director Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Frank Herbert's celebrated sci-fi novel and Esquire's best sci-fi film of the decade. Giant sandworms roam the planet, Chalamet falls in love with a blue-eyed Zendaya, and Austin Butler goes bald to portray one of the best villains of the year.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Though many critics were skeptical that Anya Taylor-Joy could take up the mantle from Mad Max: Fury Road's Charlize Theron, the Queen's Gambit star left expectations in her dust in Furiosa. The new film contains just as many exciting set pieces and mind-blowing stunts, along with a story for the steely-eyed Furiosa that's all her own.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

The planet finally belongs to the apes in the latest entry in the storied Planet of the Apes franchise. When a rival tribe attacks, kidnapping his village, a young chimpanzee must leave home for the first time. Adventure, and terrors, await. It may not be the best film in this universe, but it's more than worthy of a trip to your local theater. These mo-cap apes are downright stunning.

Spaceman

Adam Sandler goes to space! In this Netflix adaptation of Czech author Jaroslav Kalfař's novel, the Sandman plays Jakub Procházka, an astronaut on a lonely, six-month voyage to a mysterious cloud of particles just outside Jupiter. When the isolation finally gets to him, he's visited by an alien spider voiced by Paul Dano. A treat!

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Godzilla films made in America are more like live-action Rock 'Em Sock 'Em robot flicks than anything else. So, when Legendary Pictures paired the giant, nuclear lizard with King Kong, it was a match made in cinematic heaven. Now, they're teaming up against an even more dangerous foe...
