If you heard a Meryl Streep joke and decided to flip the channel just one minute into the 2024 Golden Globe Awards broadcast on Sunday night, you might be surprised to learn that Jo Koy's opening monologue didn't get any easier to sit through. For over 10 minutes, the comedian cracked jokes to a relatively silent audience of celebs about Barbie being based on "a plastic doll with big boobies," the Globes having less B-roll of Taylor Swift than NFL games, and Oppenheimer being so long it could have "used another hour." Oof.

After a couple more low-hanging jokes didn't land, Koy seemed to panic. Then he blamed his writers. "Some I wrote, some other people wrote," he said. "I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up. You are kidding me, right? Slow down. I wrote some of these, and they're the ones you're laughing at." After that, Koy jumped right back in. "Robert De Niro is here!" If there was ever a time for the music to play someone off, this was it. (You know you're done for when Taylor Swift shadily sips champagne in response.)

In Koy's defense, he was announced as the host of the ceremony on December 21, 2023, after attempts to get Ali Wong, Eddie Murphy, and even Chris Rock all fell flat. Still, Koy just couldn't seem to get the room back on his side. When he cracked a muted joke about how "white people stole everything" in Killers of the Flower Moonincluding "the premise of the movie"—he seemed all but done for the rest of the night. "That’s hilarious, I don’t care," he commented. "It’s just that the room is really white."

Naturally, social media had no problem tearing this man apart in real time. Koy may have only been on stage for 10 minutes, but it felt like an eternity of a bombed performance online. "Jo Koy is just there to make sure we get reaction gifs of celebs looking annoyed and tired," one user commented on X (formerly known as Twitter). Another person wrote: "I feel like nobody was in charge of the Golden Globes and Jo Koy just walked in and said 'I’m hosting' and nobody bothered to check if that was right." Ouch! Below, check out some more savage mocking of Koy's monologue—which may just go down as one of the worst in Golden Globes history.
