Undergarments are one of the most functional items in our wardrobe, and they can also be some of the most playful, too. Whether you’re shopping for simple lingerie styles such as a minimalistic mesh bra and underwear look or want something a little more intricate like a four-piece garter set, there are several different factors to consider when shopping for the best plus-size lingerie.

Deals of the Day

According to Kimmay Caldwell, an undergarment educator and the founder of The Fitters’ Formula, which teaches bra fitting with accuracy and empathy, plus-size lingerie needs to have enough stretch and support to do their job. This, in addition to an inclusive size range, can ensure you find pieces that fit well and make you feel like your sexiest and most confident self.

To find the best plus-size lingerie styles, we took Caldwell’s advice to heart and looked for pieces that come in inclusive (and, in some cases, more customizable) sizes, are constructed from comfortable materials with plenty of stretch, and feature key details that can enhance the wearing experience.

From classics like nightgowns, teddies, and rompers to sexier pieces like corsets, harnesses, and crotchless bodysuits, we share our top picks, ahead.

Our top pick for the best plus-size lingerie thong is the Hanky Panky Plus Size Retro Lace Thong. This comfortable lace thong is constructed from a super stretchy nylon and spandex blend with a Supima cotton crotch lining for breathability. Like other Hanky Panky underwear styles, it comes in one size, though it’s made to fit sizes 14 through 24.

The lace long has a high-rise silhouette with an extra thick waistband, so it provides comfortable support around the low belly area (and is a great option for wearing under high-rise jeans if you’re looking for a layer of protection between your skin and the denim material).

It also comes in several fun and sexy colors, including red, black, and pink. We love this thong because it’s versatile enough to pair with other lingerie pieces, and its simple design makes it a functional lingerie piece for everyday wear.

Understance Zoe FlexWire Sheer Lift Bra

See at Understance.com

The Understance Zoe FlexWire Sheer Lift Bra takes the benefits of a traditional underwire bra and the sexiness of a lacey bralette and blends them together for a functional and beautiful lingerie bra.

In band sizes 30 through 48 and cup sizes D through G, it’s most ideal for larger busts who want that bralette look with some extra lift. It also comes in several nude colors — so it’s a great everyday option under T-shirts and blouses — as well as a sexy black hue that would pair beautifully with the brand’s Simone High-Rise Lace Bikini bottoms.

The underwire in the bralette isn’t your average underwire, either. It actually has a super flexible design that is made to bend to your body’s shape for a more comfortable fit (hence the name FlexWire). It also features two layers of fabric in the cups for added coverage and shaping.

How to Pick the Best Plus Size Lingerie

Stretch and Support

When shopping for plus-size lingerie, Caldwell says to look for a good combination of stretch and support in the right places. “You want the garment to be able to flow over your unique curves, especially in the midsection and thighs, without digging in or rolling,” she explains. “And you want some support in the bust or even over the tummy if that helps you feel your best.”

According to Gabrielle Richards, brand director of Truekind and Shapermint, the fabric can play a key role in stretch and support. “Elastic materials like lycra or spandex are utilized to adapt to different body sizes and shapes,” she tells PEOPLE. “Bras made with breathable fabrics, adjustable straps, and wider bands can ensure comfort and proper fit.”

Fit Features

The way a lingerie garment fits is also worth considering. In fact, Heather Naughton, assistant vice president at Cacique Intimate Apparel, says it’s one of the most important things to consider when shopping for plus size lingerie.

“Shopping for intimate apparel can be overwhelming for many, and slipping on a beautifully designed piece of lingerie that graces your curves and fits you impeccably can provide an incredible boost of confidence,” she explains.

To find the right fit, consider options with more inclusive and customizable sizing, such as a better range of band sizes. It’s also worth looking at designs that have adjustable and convertible features, especially in the straps.

Quality Equals Comfort

Quality is a key factor for comfort. Ra'el Cohen, the co-founder and chief creative officer of ThirdLove, says some bras and lingerie styles have uncomfortable features like stiff wires, sturdy but scratchy fabric, and dense, heavy foams. “If you’re looking for something that is both comfortable and beautiful, the difference is in the details,” she notes.

With this in mind, it’s worth looking at the fabric content and design details. Dani Read, a senior designer at Cosabella, says to always prioritize good quality fabrics and to “look for lingerie with flat seams to minimize bumps or irritation.” She also recommends reading reviews from other customers as this can be super helpful when searching for insight on comfortability and quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best place to buy plus-size lingerie?

We recommend shopping at Adore Me for some of the best plus-size lingerie (including our top picks, the Adore Me Yara Contour Plus, Adore Me Tammy Cami + Short Set, and Adore Me Odessa Unlined Plus). The brand has an excellent collection of lingerie styles in an inclusive size range at excellent prices. They also offer a monthly lingerie subscription, allowing you to collect pieces over time.

In addition to Adore Me, we also love Mentionables for their collection of sexy lingerie styles, especially the Mentionables Lace & Mesh High Leg Crotchless Teddy and Mentionables Strappy Heart Harness Bottom.

Savage x Fenty also offers a fantastic collection of lingerie in inclusive sizes. Our favorite from the collection is the Savage x Fenty Mod Poppy Unlined Lace Balconette Bra, but the brand also carries teddies, corsets, harnesses, garter belts, and more.

What sizes are considered plus size in lingerie?

According to Caldwell, every store and company defines plus sizing differently. Plus sizes at larger department stores usually begin at either sizes XL or size 38 bands. “In more specialty boutiques that offer more inclusive sizing, including a size or two above an XL or 38 bands is not sufficient for their client needs, and they’ll extend up to 6XL or 50+ bands,” says Caldwell. “What’s fascinating is that bra bands go up to 56 and above — so that means there are many sizes in plus size, and perhaps the definition needs to be adjusted.”

Why can lingerie be so expensive?

Lingerie can be expensive for several reasons. Through the lens of plus sizing, Caldwell says one main reason (though it’s not the best reason) is that these sizes require the use of more material. “In some of the lower price of less sophisticated brands, slightly more material usually does not justify a price jump, but for those that use more expensive materials, each size grade up adds to the garment cost,” she says.

Prices can also go up based on how inclusive a size range is. “If a brand offers a vast size range, it’s essential for them to create different patterns and use plus fit models instead of just grading up from one pattern or model in a smaller size,” Caldwell explains. She notes that this adds to the production cost, which can be reflected in lingering prices.

In general, lingerie construction can also play a role in pricing, and this becomes especially important for some plus-size styles. “Plus size lingerie sometimes requires more engineering and supportive details like a lined cup, support stays, more hooks and eyes on the back, wider straps, or fuller coverage cups,” says Caldwell. “Small details like this add up and can add to the cost of the garment in the planning, fit and grading, and production phases,” she adds, noting that lingerie often has narrow profit margins, so every little added piece adds onto the final cost.

Some also argue that there is such a thing as a plus size “tax,” which Caldwell says there is some truth to and it’s worth considering when discussing why lingerie can be so expensive for plus sizes. “Because there are less options or because it’s considered a specialty offering, plus-size shoppers are often left with the choice to pay more or get nothing,” she confirms.
