If it’s sci-fi, action, fantasy, or scares that get you going, then there’s no need to go any further. The Best Genre Movies Currently Streaming on Peacock

Fast X

Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and the gang get in deeper over their heads than ever before in Fast X, this year’s blockbuster Fast Saga sequel that brings newcomer Jason Momoa into the fold as grudge-toting bad boy Dante. Loaded with explosive baggage that Dom’s been collecting since the fateful events of Fast Five, it’s an extravaganza of vengeance as Dante takes aim at hitting the family where it hurts, determined to answer the onscreen death of his father in Fast Five with an insane (but dementedly methodical) plan to pick off Dom’s closest loved ones. Of course things never go according to plan, which makes Fast X the kind of film that’ll keep you strapped in ’til the very end. We mean that literally: Stick around ’til the credits have rolled to catch some of the movie’s most mind-blowing major character reveals.

Asteroid City

It’s not the first movie alien he’s ever played, but it’s safe to say that Jeff Goldblum’s shy, spindly Asteroid City extraterrestrial is definitely his quirkiest. Director Wes Anderson’s signature quirks abound, in fact, in this painterly version of a 1950s desert stop where sci-fi forebodings overshadow a self-contained meta-verse of totally relatable human drama. From brainiac science kids to a singing cowboy to a jaded actress in need of a thrill, Asteroid City comes loaded with one of Anderson’s biggest ensemble of A-listers, including Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Adrien Brody, Edward Norton, Bryan Cranston, Jason Schwartzman, Margot Robbie, Tilda Swinton, Jeffrey Wright, and (of course) Goldblum himself.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

It’s-a here! Mario (Chris Pratt), Luigi (Charlie Day), Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and the whole Nintendo gang gobbled up box office coins like Goombas earlier this year with The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Now the family-friendly, game-based blockbuster — complete with the creative blessing of Mario mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto — is boppin’ and sockin’ it to big baddie Bowser (Jack Black) with powered-up platforming panache on Peacock. You’ll laugh, you’ll fly, and you might even cry at Black’s now-iconic “Peaches” singalong lullaby… but however you slice it, the Mushroom Kingdom beckons with Easter eggs aplenty, hatched from more than 40 years’ worth of Mario gaming greatness.

Ghostbusters

Equal parts spooky, funny, and awe-inspiring, Ghostbusters remains one of cinematic history’s most beloved and perennially-revisited franchises. Producer/director Ivan Reitman’s original 1984 classic boasted an absolute dream cast, with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson anchoring all the intrepid specter-snatching hijinks as the iconic quartet of tech-assisted ghost hunters who snuffed out New York’s most stubborn, mischief-minded spirits. Just in time for Halloween season to kick into gear, Peacock is featuring not only the 1984 original, but the hilarious 1989 sequel, Ghostbusters II, too!

Get Out

Jordan Peele’s Academy Award-winning 2017 hell ride into the bowels of an isolated family’s sick quest for immortality sprung the former Key & Peele comedian into the realms of serious cinema. Featuring Daniel Kaluuya as an unsuspecting boyfriend taking a big step in his mixed-race relationship by embarking on a weekend trip to meet his girlfriend’s (Allison Williams) extended fam, Get Out starts as an innocent exploration of benign social niceties before swerving into truly deranged terror territory. Nothing’s as it seems at first glance at the stately rural mansion where his meet-the-parents tour turns gravely ugly, as Kaluuya’s stranded character gets entangled in an elaborate life-stealing plot that suggests his doting girlfriend hasn’t, uhm, been exactly honest about how chill her family is… or about her own investment in their long-term relationship.

Ambulance

Any movie that teams Jake Gyllenhaal with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is a movie we wanna see, and that’s just what we get with 2022’s heist thriller Ambulance. The star duo pair off as adoptive brothers who back their way into a reluctant bank heist that rapidly goes wrong (of course), leading to their desperate getaway aboard the titular EMT vehicle. That’s only the beginning, though: Ambulance charges sirens-wailing into an explosive Los Angeles crime story, where all the bullet-riddled action comes with real and tragic consequences. If anti-hero underdog stories are your jam, this is one emergency hell ride you’ll definitely want to take.

Renfield

Nicolas Cage as Dracula — what more does anybody need? Putting Cage in a cape is just the first among a long list of inspired silly setups in the hilariously bloody Renfield, which finds its titular blood-bonded servant (Nicholas Hoult) looking for any escape he can from the clutches of the world’s suckiest megalomaniacal boss. Awkwafina turns in a funny-yet-kinda-poignant performance as a New Orleans cop who’s ready to stake her own life on taking down the Dark Lord, in a story that absolutely soaks the screen in gorily glorious Dracula takedowns that deserve some kind of award just for their violent inventiveness alone. Despite the sanguine mayhem and sinister themes, there’s a tongue-in-cheek lilt to Renfield that reminds us of free-spirited comedy blockbuster classics like Men in Black and Back to the Future.

The Matrix

He’s beginning to believe! Few movies of any genre, nearly a quarter century after their release, can claim the kind of game-changing influence on present-day filmmakers and audiences like Neo’s original unplugging from The Matrix. Despite sequels that never managed to live up to the expectations set by the Wachowskis’ landmark 1999 first film, Keanu Reeves’ initial outing as The One routinely rates at or near the top of nearly everyone’s list of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made. Of all the effects-heavy sci-fi flicks released before the turn of the new millennium, The Matrix — for both its chains-breaking story and its groundbreaking visual effects — still holds up as an eternal dystopian allegory that seems to stand outside of time.

Self/Less

Self/Less is a star-powered action thriller with an intriguing science fiction twist: What if you could live forever by having a shady scientist perform a surgery that transfers your consciousness into a newer, younger body? Ryan Reynolds does just that in this fast-paced race through the pricey end of the biotech black market, sleuthing for answers after swapping his older, dying frame (in the early-movie form of the great Ben Kingsley) for a younger one that comes with way more of a bleak backstory than he ever bargained for. A perfect blend of heady sci-fi futurism and pulse-pounding thrills, Self/Less turns Reynolds loose to settle the score while stepping outside his comedic comfort zone.

They Live

He’s here to chew bubblegum and kick ass… and you probably know the rest. There’s never been a movie antihero quite like Roddy Piper’s iconic, fed-up everyman stomping toward society-correcting justice in John Carpenter’s 1988 horror classic, They Live, a movie that bequeathed pop culture with a ton of often-imitated tropes that still feel fresh today. From the mysterious sunglasses that magically reveal the world’s true totalitarian state, to Piper’s epically long fight scene with costar Keith David, to that infamously hilarious bubble gum line itself, They Live punches far above its small-budget weight as a can’t-miss slice of social commentary that never forgets its most important mission: to deliver an alien ass-kicking romp from start to finish.

The Northman

Director Robert Eggers already proved his mastery of atmospheric period horror in 2015’s The Witch, and The Northman ups the historical ante with a Viking revenge tale based in a setting inspired by the ice-cold tropes of Norse mythology. Alexander Skarsgård leads a star-studded cast as Viking scion Amleth, who's bent on vengeance after a treacherous coup leaves his village ravaged, his childhood stolen, and his father dead. This one’s filled with great acting turns, including icily evocative performances from Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, and Björk.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

If you’re awed by Rupert Grint’s killer grown-up turns in present-day projects like Servant and Knock at the Cabin, then it’s an absolute mind warp to go back to the first Harry Potter film and see the magic these kids — back when they were kids — brought to Hogwarts right from the start. The 2001 movie that started it all feels both fresh and nostalgic today, with each new fantasy beat widening the invitation to just suspend all disbelief and get fully invested in Butterbeer, Quidditch, Hagrid, and house-sorting. Best of all, the first film is only the start: All of the mainline movies in the Harry Potter franchise also are streaming now on Peacock.

V/H/S

The original found-footage fright compendium that launched a entire horror franchise, 2012’s V/H/S inventively spins its series of seemingly unrelated vignettes into a bigger, scarier whole. Each piece of this chunky anthology bears the unique auteur’s mark of a different director, with horror helmers including Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, Ti West, and more all having their turn at the terror. Watch it with the lights dimmed and something (or someone) to grab onto when the sudden scares arrive… because in this generous grab-bag of scary-movie tropes, you’re definitely gonna need it.
