Good Luck to You, Leo Grande

There's a lot to find pleasure in while watching this 2022 sex dramedy. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande stars Emma Thompson as a former religious school teacher who hires a sex worker named Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack) to help with her first-ever orgasm.

Summer of Soul

Winning the Oscar for Best Documentary in 2022 (yet the shining moment was notoriously robbed by something else), The Roots drummer Questlove made his directorial debut with Summer of Soul, which follows 1969's Harlem Cultural Festival by using all but forgotten concert footage cut with new interviews of performers and attendees. The critically-acclaimed film aims to "restore its history," considering the massive fête hosted legendary performers such as Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone and Mahalia Jackson, among others, over six Sundays that summer — but was widely overshadowed in the news by Woodstock, which was happening about 100 miles away on one overlapping weekend.

In this 2021 coming-of-age comedy, an overprotected teen has sex for the first time once her mom leaves town and recruits her best friend for a road trip adventure to the nearest Planned Parenthood for the titular emergency contraceptive. Starring Kuhoo Verma and Victoria Moroles, this buddy movie is as timely as it is heartfelt.

Hulu's 2022 sapphic rom-com follows an ambitious student named Paige Evans (Rowan Blanchard), who joins her high school's track team to become more acquainted with her crush, yet finds her heart racing for another teammate. Auliʻi Cravalho and Isabella Ferreira also star in this adorable teen flick.
The Valet

This 2022 remake of the original French rom-com follows a personal driver (Eugenio Derbez) who's hired to date an A-lister (Samara Weaving) to cover up her affair with a married billionaire (Max Greenfield). The movie is also dedicated to its cast member and telenovela star Carmen Salinas, who died at age 82 before the movie's release.

This one's not for the faint of heart. In this 2020 horror flick, Sarah Paulson — a reigning queen of the genre — stars as a ruthless helicopter parent whose twisted secrets are investigated by her daughter.

Nightmare Alley

Based on William Lindsay Gresham's eponymous novel, Nightmare Alley follows a hapless carnival worker, played by Bradley Cooper, who builds a career beyond the sideshow by passing himself off as a mentalist to hustle others. The higher he climbs, though, the farther there is to fall. Guillermo del Toro's 2021 psychological horror features a stellar ensemble cast, including Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara and Toni Collette, among others.
Superbad

Rogen, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Bill Hader and Emma Stone also star.
The 40-Year-Old Virgin

Part buddy-comedy, part rom-com, this 2005 flick has Steve Carell in the title role as socially awkward Andy, who is encouraged by his electronics store co-workers (Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd and Romany Malco) to have sex. Their problematic advice and Andy's feelings for a customer (Catherine Keener) make Judd Apatow's first time (directing a movie, that is) memorable.

Death on the Nile
