Bert Kreischer (‘Razzle Dazzle’): ‘I believe I am the fortunate son’ and ‘want to have fun’ [Exclusive Video Interview]

One night I took my shirt off to remind myself it should be fun,” recalls a shirtless Bert Kreischer about when he was a struggling stand-up comedian. For our recent webchat he continues, “You could feel the energy in the room loosen up and my energy loosen up. I started smiling. That set went beautifully. So I still have that. Not to sound too hippy dippy but it ties in with gratitude. Every time I walk on stage, especially now in arenas, there’s a moment where I walk up the stairs and they are playing ‘Fortunate Son’ and I believe I am the fortunate son. I want to have fun. I want to drink if I want to drink. I want to smoke weed if I want to smoke weed. But ultimately, I perform best sober until the last 15 minutes of the show.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“Razzle Dazzle” is Kreischer’s fifth comedy special and is streaming on Netflix. The comedian jokes about causing a stir at school functions and asking his wife to help with body hair issues. He explains, “I was less in my head and more present for that special than I’ve ever been. I was the most emotionally prepared. I went out and bought a faux fur jacket that day. Like a ridiculous jacket. I had f****** fun shooting ‘Razzle Dazzle.’ I was so comfortable with the material and the structure. When you get ready for a special it’s so important where you place your jokes and how you structure that hour. Perspective wise I did a lot of emotional growth and I was ready for that f****** special.”

Kreischer was recently named Stand Up Comedian of the Year by “Just For Laughs.” The comic uses storytelling heavily in his routines. This year he starred in “The Machine,” a movie based on a story told in his 2016 special involving the Russian mafia. He reflects, “I think the funniest things are the things you never could have written. Inadvertently, no one can steal those bits, because they are real and authentic. Getting involved with the Russian mafia is a story I didn’t want to tell cause it didn’t seem relatable. But when Joe Rogan heard it, he was ‘that’s who you are.’”

“Razzle Dazzle” will be eligible for the newly announced Golden Globe category for stand-up performances. Kreischer declares, “I’m so f****** excited about it. It’s cool as s***. As a person in love with stand-up comedy I know there is a way to do what we do well. The highlight of the Golden Globes will be the Globe for the best comedian. Because that speech is going to be f****** hilarious, unpredictable, a tad bit offensive and very loose. I will be what everyone is talking about Monday morning. And if it’s me, my shirt is coming the f*** off!”
