Coretta Scott King’s daughter, Dr. Bernice King, has seemingly responded to Jonathan Majors’ remarks regarding her mother.

King took to X/Twitter on Tuesday (Jan. 9) to defend her mother’s legacy after Majors decided to mention her during his fall from grace. Bernice insisted that there is more to her mom than simply being a “prop.”

“My mother wasn’t a prop,” she typed. “She was a peace advocate before she met my father and was instrumental in him speaking out against the Vietnam War. Please understand…my mama was a force.” Dr. Bernice King then linked an essay she wrote about King’s power and resilience for HuffPost. The 2017 article titled A Woman Purposed To Be A King explained how Coretta’s strength changed the world before and after she met her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“Her life with my father was a remarkable display of consistency to purpose, as Coretta Scott King not only excelled as a wife and mother, but also utilized her diplomacy and gift as a singer to advance the movement,” Bernice wrote. “My parents were partners and she was a woman at the forefront of activism for civil and human rights.”

“After my father’s assassination in 1968, my mother’s life without my father would become the clearest and most prevailing testament to the wisdom and fortitude which had been cultivated in her since birth. That same year, she founded the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change in my father’s birth city, Atlanta.”

As for the former Marvel star, Majors has mentioned Coretta’s name twice. During the trial, audio was leaked of Majors demanding that his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, act more like King or Michelle Obama. He insisted Jabbari “make sacrifices for him,” much like these women did for their famous husbands.

During his recent Good Morning America interview, the entertainer name-dropped the icon again, calling his new girlfriend, Meagan Good, his “Coretta.” However, Majors insisted that he meant no ill intent with his analogy.

“Everything has kinda gone away. And it’s just me now, you know, and my lovely, you know, partner, Meagan [Good], and my dogs. She’s an angel. She’s held me down like a Coretta. I’m so blessed to have her. The relationship is still fresh, but I think I’ve found her,” he said during the interview.
