Berks County churches to honor veterans [Religion Digest]

Nov. 11----St. John's (Hain's) United Church of Christ, 591 N. Church Road, Lower Heidelberg Township, will recognize and honor all veterans during the 9:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday. The Rev. Douglas Etter, retired Army chaplain (colonel), chief communication's officer at the Lebanon VA Medical Center and former PA Chief of Chaplains, will be the guest speaker. Special music will be offered by bagpiper Jim Scott, who will lead worshippers to the cemetery for the conclusion of the service.

—Schwarzwald Lutheran Church, 250 Church Lane Road, Exeter Township, will recognize veterans during its 10:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday.

—Becker's St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 265 Maidencreek Road, Richmond Township, will have a guest musician, Ethan Hardy playing the bagpipes, accompanying organist Rexine Krause, to honor Veterans Day and members of the congregation who have served in the Armed Forces during the 9 a.m. worship service on Sunday.

—United Church of Christ of Robesonia, 301 W. Penn Ave., will hold a Healing Service on Sunday at 10:15 a.m. that will include a prayer for veterans. Other events happening this week: Men's Group meeting, today, 8:30 a.m. at the Heidelberg Restaurant, 910 W. Penn Ave., Robesonia; Western Berks Shepherding volunteer lunch, Wednesday, St. John's Reformed Church, 4001 Penn Ave., Sinking Spring. Also, the church's Christmas bazaar will be held next Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

—During its 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday, Christ Lutheran Church, 1301 Luzerne St. Reading, will welcome Chris "Topher" Bower, president of the Armed Forces Brotherhood and executive officer of the Veterans Coalition of PA, who will speak about his work with veterans in Berks County. Bower grew up attending Christ Lutheran.

—There will be a litany to honor all veterans during the 10:15 a.m. worship service on Sunday at Friedens United Church of Christ, 337 Main St., Oley. Bonnie Levan will be the guest musician.

—St. John's Lutheran Church, 1035 Old River Road, Robeson Township, will hold

a holiday bazaar today from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. There will be crafts, a Chinese auction and white elephant items. Breakfast sandwiches, homemade soups, BBQ, hot dogs and baked goods will be for sale.

—Isabel Funari will be the guest percussionist during the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services on Sunday at Calvary United Church of Christ, 640 Centre Ave., Reading.

—On Sunday at 9:05 a.m., Christ Episcopal Church, 435 Court St., Reading, will offer a forum presented by Fr. Bryce Wandrey titled "An Assortment of Saints" in the first-floor parlor. Parking is available in the Abe Lincoln Hotel garage and the M&T Bank lot, both located off of Washington Street. Handicap spaces are located beside the church on Court Street

—Coffee and Conversation will be held on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. in the Welcome Center at Christ Lutheran Church, 222 Niantic Road, Douglass Township, Montgomery County.

—St. John's Lutheran Church, 45 N. Reading Ave., Boyertown, will have a free drive-thru, take-out meal today from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. No registration necessary. A free community Thanksgiving meal will be offered on Nov. 19. Register online at stjohnsboyertown.org.

—Music at the 9 a.m. worship service on Sunday at Maidencreek Church, 261 Main St., Maidencreek Township, includes a vocal solo and guitar duet by Kimberly and Jamie Ayrton.
