Berklee College of Music organist to play locally

May 23—GREENSBURG — Organist, violist, violinist and sophomore at Berklee College of Music Jamey Rowe will perform at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 26, at Greensburg United Methodist Church, 301 N. Broadway Street, Greensburg.

Rowe, a Brookville native, will perform a selection of sacred and classical organ selections for 30 minutes before GUMC's ordinary Sunday worship as well as accompanying during the worship service.

Rowe, now 20, was 2 years of age when he was diagnosed as autistic.

One of three triplets, Jamey and a brother suffered a protracted illness with extremely high temperatures.

Jamey's communication skills were damaged, but he learned American Sign Language which helped him communicate with his parents.

At 6 years of age, Jamey became interested in music and would spend hours online researching composers like Bach and Beethoven. He would play their melodies on anything he could: a piano, a viola or whatever was available.

It was then that he learned that orchestras rarely have enough violists, so he picked up the viola full-time in school and eventually studied at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.

He's also studied at Miss Shannon's School of Music in Batesville, and attends Berklee classes online when he isn't playing music for different audiences all over the state.

Jamey's favorite composers are Chopin, Stravinsky and Satie, but he also likes bluegrass and folk music.

Sunday's performance is free.
