Benedict Cumberbatch on How Doctor Strange's Magic Is Changing Marvel Landscape

With the addition of Doctor Strange to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, magic is suddenly a force to be reckoned with. When Yahoo Movies had the chance to sit down with the film’s star, Benedict Cumberbatch, our own Khail Anonymous asked him for his thoughts on this new wrinkle being added to the mix.

“Magic is spectacular in the 21st century cinematic film universe Marvel’s created because of where we’re at with filmmaking, and that was one of the lures, obviously, of doing it now,” the Oscar-nominated actor said. “I always ask, ‘What’s the reason or the necessity or how can we make doing this now work?’ And primarily that’s about character. It’s about what story we’re going to tell. ‘How is that going to affect the world to which we’re presenting it?’ But obviously, magic is a massive component. And what they’ve created in this film is mind-blowingly beautiful.”

While the finished product is getting raves for how it presented the magic, the actors, of course, didn’t have the benefit of seeing the effects in person. Cumberbatch said that actors are constantly put in a position of having to imagine the world around them, and that Doctor Strange is not too different from other movie sets.

“All the stuff we did, however foolish we felt on the day, we committed to it,” he said. “And as an actor, you’re constantly suspending disbelief and throwing yourself into imaginary circumstances. It’s all smoke and mirrors and pretend. This is obviously turned up to 11. And they created such beauty around that it works. It really, really works.”

Doctor Strange opens in theaters this Friday, Nov. 4.
