Ben Affleck Spoke About 'Trying to Learn to Compromise' with Jennifer Lopez Before Rumors of Marriage Issues

The couple shed light on their relationship in the documentary ‘The Greatest Love Story Never Told’

Before speculation began about a strain in Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s marriage, the couple opened up about “trying to learn to compromise” in their relationship.

In the Prime Video documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told, both the “Jenny from the Block” singer, 54, and Affleck, 51, discussed the rekindling of their romance in 2021 after first dating from 2002 to 2004.

“Getting back together, I said, ‘Listen, one of the things I don’t want is a relationship on social media,’ ” Affleck recalled in an interview in the documentary. “Then I sort of realized it’s not a fair thing to ask. It’s sort of like, you’re gonna marry a boat captain and you go, ‘Well, I don’t like the water.’ ”

Affleck then called himself and his wife “two people with different kinds of approaches trying to learn to compromise.”

Also in the documentary, Lopez admitted she didn’t think Affleck “is very comfortable with me doing all of this,” referring to the ways her husband served as inspiration for her recent album This Is Me…Now and its accompanying visual film This Is Me…Now: A Love Story.

“He loves me, he knows I’m an artist, and he’s gonna support me in every way he can because he knows you can’t stop me from making the music I made,” the Hustlers star said in her interview. “But that doesn’t mean he’s comfortable being the muse.”

Elsewhere in the film, Affleck asked Lopez oncamera if she had forgiven him or had been angry at him during the ups and downs of their relationship.

“I think I was angry at you for a long time,” she told him. “But that heartbreak set both of us on a course to figuring ourselves out, to being better people. I think I’ve forgiven you all the way. I think I need to forgive myself [for] some things.”

In a Feb. 26 conversation with producer Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas about The Greatest Love Story Never Told held in Los Angeles, Lopez said it was "very scary" to share the details of her personal life in the film.

"The other scary part was that I was bringing into it my husband, who was kind of the reluctant participant, silent participant and all… During one of the parts of the movie, I was like, 'Is this weird?' He's like, 'Yes.' ”

Despite that, Lopez added at the time that Affleck was the one who suggested capturing more behind-the-scenes footage of her life. “My husband, who had a front seat to the whole thing really, was the one who was like, 'We should be capturing this,' and he brought on this amazing team and that's kind of how it happened,” she recalled.

The Jason Bergh-directed doc includes other interviews with the pop superstar’s inner circle and longtime collaborators. It also reveals the reason behind its title: Affleck gave his partner, in honor of their first Christmas reunited, a book that included every letter and email they’d ever exchanged over two decades, which he titled “The Greatest Love Story Never Told.”

At the documentary’s Feb. 13 screening in Los Angeles, Lopez choked up thanking her husband in a speech that acknowledged his discomfort with the spotlight.

“There is the person who inspired this for me, who has inspired me my whole life," she announced. "And I know he hates that I'm doing this right now… He's just like, 'Please shut up.’ No! And I say no. I say, I love you and thank you for believing in me and helping me believe in myself.”

The Greatest Love Story Never Told is now streaming on Prime Video.
