In a new Dunkin' commercial, which aired during the 2024 Grammys, Ben Affleck isn't sad — he's just becoming a popstar with help from Charli D’Amelio

Ben Affleck is once again starring in a Dunkin' commercial — and this time, he's clearing his name.

The spot, which aired during the 2024 Grammys, pokes fun at the actor's appearance at last year's Grammys. At the award show in 2023 with wife Jennifer Lopez, Affleck's unamused facial expressions sparked a parade of "Sad Affleck" memes across social media. (Lopez has since laughed off the comments saying, "He is happy!")

At the start of the ad, a news clip of Affleck and Lopez is on a television screen. The headline reads “Boredest Man in the World."

“Keep laughing,” he says in the clip while sipping on an iced Dunkin’ coffee. “He’s bored. No. Steady. Always watching. I can do that. How hard can it be?”

In the next scene, he answers a call, presumably from Lopez. “What’s going on baby? I had this crazy dream, you’re going to laugh,” he explains. “I had come up with like some beats. And then you were like, ‘Maybe you should put that on the record.’ I even had a persona like JLo or like BLo. That’s the bad version obviously.”

When he asks if she had any time to help today, he clearly gets rejected. “I understand,” he says, clutching a Dunkin’ donut box.

The next half of the commercial chronicles Affleck’s efforts to get his “beats” on the map and heard by music experts. His journey to become a “Popstar” (the title of the ad) includes a lot more downs than ups.

Charli D’Amelio, who has over 151 million followers on TikTok, knows a thing or two about capturing audiences through music and dancing. Affleck enlists her help in the commercial.

“Maybe you can show me how it looks like,” he says to her. She then does a nimble leg lift and dance. “Yeah I can do that,” Affleck hilariously quips. D’Amelio, who is also a Dunkin' superfan, then gives him a concerned look, following his last question to her: "Who is TikTok?”

After his unsuccessful training session with D'Amelio, Affleck decides to hype himself up with some positive self-talk.

“They tell you you’re no good. You’re a goofy, middle-aged, clumsy white guy with no rhythm and you can’t sing on key. You’re not coordinated. That means I can't be a popstar?” he exclaims. “Underestimate Boston? At your peril.”

Amid the motivational speech, Affleck is seen taking a bite out of a giant chocolate glazed donut with rainbow sprinkles. “This is me now,” he says, while wearing a chain with a matching donut around his neck. (His reference cheekily alludes to Lopez’s album titled “This Is Me…Now.”)

The commercial ends on a cliff-hanger — “To Be Continued” it reads, leaving fans wondering what Dunkin’ and Affleck have in store next.

The spot was developed by Artists Equity, the production company Affleck created alongside friend Matt Damon. Affleck and Artists Equity also created Dunkin’s Super Bowl ad in 2023.

He played a Dunkin' employee serving unsuspecting attendees their beverages and treats in a hidden camera-like spot. At one point, while he was working the drive-thru, Lopez appeared and teased her husband. "What are you doing? Is that what you do when you say you're going to work all day?" she quipped.

The actor spoke exclusively with PEOPLE on the Massachusetts set of the project. "I think people already sort of think that I work for Dunkin'," he said with a laugh.

"In Boston, it was such a big deal," he explained. "I think I became kind of associated with it, and this sounded like a fun opportunity to kind of play with that association, and a chance to come back here to shoot it at home in Boston."
