Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez's differing outlooks can cause conflicts in their marriage, sources tell PEOPLE.

The stars, who married in 2022 after rekindling their romance two decades after they called off a previous engagement, are currently living separately in Los Angeles amid reported tension between the two.

Over the weekend they were photographed smiling together, and they've continued wearing their wedding rings in public, though multiple sources indicated to PEOPLE that there's a strain on their relationship.

"They just have very different approaches when it comes to media attention. Ben hates all attention and it makes him very uncomfortable. Jennifer has always had a different approach," one insider says.

A source in the film industry says Affleck, 51, has "always been impressed" by Lopez's work ethic and success in the industry, however, "always sharing her life is not his way."

"Even though he admires that about her, it doesn’t make him happy and causes stress in his life and then in hers. There is no question their different styles clash," adds that source.

A third source, from the music world, says Lopez, 54, "needs that expression but Affleck simply is not comfortable with it."

"After a while it causes tension in the relationship," says the source. "He is more introspective and private. She likes to open her heart to her fans and to the world. This makes them considerably different, and it has been difficult in the day-to-day relationship."

"There have always been clashes in their styles, how they handle issues, and their actions, but nothing has stopped their love over the years," the source says. "This is a great love story."

Reps for Lopez and Affleck have not responded to PEOPLE's requests for comment.

Lopez, who is gearing up for a tour and the launch of her new sci-fi film Atlas on Netflix, recently debuted an album, This Is Me... Now, and an accompanying film that was inspired by her romance with Affleck. With it came a documentary, titled The Greatest Love Story Never Told, in which Affleck participated and spoke on their marriage.

"Getting back together, I said, ‘Listen, one of the things I don’t want is a relationship on social media,’ ” Affleck said in the documentary. “Then I sort of realized it’s not a fair thing to ask. It’s sort of like, you’re gonna marry a boat captain and you go, ‘Well, I don’t like the water.’ ”

The actor, who shares three kids with ex-wife Jennifer Garner, then called himself and Lopez "two people with different kinds of approaches trying to learn to compromise."

At the same time, Lopez, who has two kids with ex-husband Marc Anthony, acknowledged in the documentary that she did not think Affleck was "very comfortable with me doing all of this," in terms of pulling from their private life for her creative work.

"He loves me, he knows I’m an artist, and he’s gonna support me in every way he can because he knows you can’t stop me from making the music I made," she said. "But that doesn’t mean he’s comfortable being the muse.”

During a Feb. 13 screening of Greatest Love Story Never Told, Lopez got emotional as she thanked Affleck in a speech: "There is the person who inspired this for me, who has inspired me my whole life. And I know he hates that I'm doing this right now… He's just like, 'Please shut up.’ No! And I say no. I say, I love you and thank you for believing in me and helping me believe in myself."

Both stars have spoken about what went wrong in their previous relationship and how things had changed when they got back together.

As Lopez told PEOPLE in February 2022, "We have been in the game in the public eye long enough to know who we are as people and what really matters and what doesn't matter. ... We really live our lives in a way we can be proud of and our kids can be proud of you. We're just operating from a place of love and respect for everyone in our lives and that is very important to us."

She added at the time, "We know what the truth is [and] we hold it sacred."
