Beloved gourmet hot dog restaurant in Scottsdale closing after 8 years. 'I'm devastated'

Simon's Hot Dogs is closing its brick-and-mortar after eight years. The last day of service is Oct. 28.

Colombian couple Marcela and Felipe Roldan first started the business in 2010, when they began making hot dogs with Colombian touches at Oak Creek Brewery in Sedona. After five years in the brewery's 60-foot kitchen they opened a 1,500 square-foot brick-and-mortar in Scottsdale.

In an Instagram post dated Oct. 9, Simon's Hot Dogs announced their plan to close the restaurant. "The rent has skyrocketed to an unsustainable level, leaving us with no choice but to take a temporary hiatus."

In a statement to The Republic, Marcela wrote that the rent more than doubled. "We can't afford that."

What was Simon's Hot Dogs known for?

The signature hot dog came topped with pineapple, mozzarella cheese, Simon sauce (Thousand Island with mustard) and crushed potato chips, served on a fresh-baked, steamed bun.

The hot-dog-centric menu featured the likes of Sonoran Cousin, made with refried beans, onions, mustard, Simon‛s sauce, bacon bites and peppers (jalapenos or banana peppers). And the restaurant also offers some notable vegan options.

Fans responded to the news with frustration

Fans took to the comments to express disappointment and to invite the owners to come to their neighborhoods.

@lafashionsnob wrote: "It’s annoying that the City won’t step in and put their foot down on these landlords. Simon’s is a staple and deserves to thrive."

@alien_blondie_adventures wrote: "I’m devastated. We have to find you a new place bec you guys are an absolute gem & we love you. So many memories here! It’s more than just hotdogs 🌭, you all are like family."

The Simon's account responded: "It is with heavy hearts that we bid you farewell for now, but we hold onto hope that we find a new place soon that we can afford and continue serving you."

They added that the couple's food truck remains functional and the family would love help finding a place to park it.
