The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey recently opened up about receiving "painful" comments regarding their appearance when they got cast in the hit HBO series. In their latest interview with GQ, the 19-year-old nonbinary actor revealed they were "taunted" by trolls online who said they had a "square head."

"You're looking for a comment that's more painful than the last one, I'd kid myself that I was doing it in jest," they told the publication, adding, "I wish I could say that I was confident enough [already] that it hasn't affected me in any way, but it has."

On the HBO series, Bella plays Ellie, an orphaned queer teen in postapocalyptic America who is immune to the deadly disease that changed the world during a pandemic. Ellie was first featured on the PlayStation video game series of the same name, and Bella said that despite the trolling and negativity they've received, they're proud to portray the beloved character.

"I'm just glad I could do that for [the fans] and for the show and for Ellie. I want to do her justice," they explained.

This isn't the first time Bella has addressed negativity toward themself or the series. They also called out haters for criticizing Ellie's queer storyline on the show. "I know people will think what they want to think. But they're gonna have to get used to it," they explained to GQ. "If you don't want to watch the show because it has gay storylines, because it has a trans character, that's on you, and you're missing out."

The Last of Us has officially been renewed for a second season with Bella and their co-star, Pedro Pascal, slated to reprise their roles as Ellie and Joel.
