Bell Works adds Vonage, as renamed Mack-Cali dumps office building business

HOLMDEL - Vonage, the business cloud communications company now a part of Swedish giant Ericsson, has moved its corporate headquarters a little over three miles to Bell Works, the historic former Bell Labs building.

For more than a decade, Vonage has leased 23 Main St. in Holmdel, a 350,000-square-foot building and one of the largest office buildings at the Jersey Shore. While Vonage has subleased some space, it remains leased to the telecommunications company.

"Like many companies, in the past two years we have moved to a hybrid working environment and, to accommodate our rapidly growing company and the changing needs of our team members, we have recently moved our headquarters to the state-of-the-art Bell Works facility," a Vonage spokesperson said in a statement to What's Going There.

"The dynamic, creative and tech-focused space at Bell Works will allow us to continue to expand right here in New Jersey as we continue to work towards making Vonage a destination place to work," the spokesperson said.

Vonage remains "committed to this community," the spokesperson said.

Somerset Development and its president, Ralph Zucker, converted the historic Bell Labs building into a 2-million-square-foot office and retail center, attracting employers such as iCIMS, Jersey Central Power & Light, WorkWave and IFF.

The move is not the only change at Vonage. Last month, telecommunications equipment maker Ericsson completed its acquisition of Vonage Holdings.

Meanwhile, Veris Residential, the owner of 23 Main St., has lined up a buyer for Vonage's former headquarters. The company, formerly known as Mack-Cali Corp., said the building, and a Hyatt Hotel in Jersey City, are under contract to sell for a total $132.25 million. The names of the buyers, and the sales price for each building, were not disclosed.

The sale of the 88-acre Holmdel property, which sits between Route 34 and Holmdel Road, represents the last of the company's suburban office buildings. It shed the rest of its office portfolio around New Jersey, which have included buildings and office parks in Neptune, Freehold Township, Middletown and Wall.

In December 2021, Mack-Cali changed its name to Veris Residential in a move to focus on multifamily properties in urban and transit markets like Jersey City.
