Belgian beer and Boca ballet because … um … why not? Tickets available for Best of the Belgians Beer Fest

This is “Small Bites,” a South Florida Sun Sentinel feature with tiny tidbits on the food and beverage scene — because we know that sometimes you just don’t have room for a long article. You want a little news brief instead, an amuse bouche of information, if you will. Enjoy!

WHAT:

Best of the Belgians Beer Fest? Sure! Nothing odd about that.

But the event is being staged — for the third time, no less — by the Boca Ballet Theatre. Gotta admit: Did not see that dynamic duo being a thing.

Combining Belgian brewskis with food trucks and live music, the one-day festival set for February came from a pair of beer buds, Barrel of Monks Brewing co-owner Bill McFee and Boca Ballet’s Dan Guin.

“I wanted to combine my passion for Belgian beer with supporting my other passion: the arts, specifically Boca Ballet Theatre,” explains Guin, the dance company’s executive/co-artistic director.

And why Flemish suds? “The flavor profiles,” Guin explains. “I believe they are the best beers in the world.”

The first Belgian beer fest was produced in 2019, with a sophomore effort in 2020 (there was also the Brewtopia fundraiser in 2008). After a pandemic break, the brew bros are back and joining their other partners, Bon Beer Voyage and Cavalier Distributing, for this en pointe fundraiser.

“It was Bill McFee from Barrel of Monks that originally introduced me to Belgian beer,” recalls Guin. “I then toured Belgium, France and the Netherlands with Bon Beer Voyage, multiple times. The synergy was there to make this happen. Cavalier has positioned themselves as the preeminent Belgian beer distributor in Florida. They were impressed with our passion to educate people about a product line to which they are closely aligned.”

Other breweries participating include: Achouffe, Boon, Bosteels, Cantillon, Chimay, Cornelissen, De Dolle, De Struise, Delirium, Duvel, Girardin, La Trappe, Lindemans, Ommegang, Orval, Oud Beersel, Petrus, Rochefort, St. Bernardus, St. Feuillien, Timmermans, Van Steenberge, Verhaeghe, Westmalle and Zundert.
