Behind-the-Scenes at the 2020 Oscars — What You Didn’t See on TV

When you have a show as big and as glamorous as the Oscars, some killer behind-the-scenes moments will inevitably take place. Of course, those of us who weren’t able to make it to the Academy Awards (so, like, most of us) weren’t privy to these behind-the-scenes highlights since they took place just outside of the scope of the TV cameras. So, to get the full picture, we did a little digging.

If you tuned in to the 92^nd Academy Awards on Sunday night, you know it was packed with interesting moments. Janelle Monáe opened the show by serenading Tom Hanks. Matthew A. Cherry, co-director of Best Animated Short Film winner Hair Love, gave a sweet shout-out to late NBA star Kobe Bryant. Maya Rudolph and Kristin Wiig, well, they Maya Rudolph’ed and Kristin Wiig’ed out… as they do. Eminem came through with a surprise “Lose Yourself” performance. And Parasite made history by becoming the first non-English language film in Oscar history to win Best Picture.

And that just scratches the surface of everything that went down during the three-and-a-half-hour ceremony — and actually made it to the small screen. As for what didn’t make the telecast, let’s explore some of the best behind-the-scenes moments from the 2020 Oscars red carpet (and a few that took place during the ceremony, too).

Julia Butters Packed a Snack

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood‘s 10-year-old Julia Butters came prepared the long night. When asked for a peek inside the young star’s pink crystal-covered Marzook purse on the red carpet, Butters revealed a turkey sandwich inside. As she explained, she doesn’t “like some of the food” at award shows.

Taika Waititi Hammed It Up

Taika Waititi was making the most of Oscars night well before he won Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit. While on the red carpet, the filmmaker clearly had a good time playing it up for the paparazzi. He kept that playful vibe throughout the evening, telling the press after his win that writers should demand that Apple redesign their “impossible to write on” keyboards.

Stars Pre-Gamed with Sheet Masks

Little Women star Florence Pugh and VEEP‘s Julia Louis-Dreyfus both took to Instagram to show how they were getting ready for the red carpet. The apparent secret to their dewy Oscars skin? Sheet masks! Pugh revealed the look in a Story, writing, “Motherfunking OSCARS!!” Louis-Dreyfus also shared a photo of her best resting sheet-mask face, joking that it was all part of “the beautification business” of the Oscars.

Florence Pugh & Scarlett Johansson Fangirled Out

Speaking of Pugh, she and Jojo Rabbit star Scarlett Johansson properly fangirled out over each other on the red carpet. Just as adorable as their interaction? The look on the face of Johansson’s fiancé, Colin Jost.

Mindy Kaling Traveled Via Specialized Transport

As Mindy Kaling revealed in her Instagram Stories, she couldn’t just take any car to the red carpet. To ensure her stunning (one of the best looks of the night) canary yellow Dolce & Gabbana dress didn’t crease, the hilarious star hired a transport van tall enough for her to stand in on the way to L.A.’s Dolby Theatre.

Meanwhile, Mark Ruffalo Kept His Carpool Low-Key

The always adorable Mark Ruffalo brought fans along for the ride by sharing an oh-so-sweet snapshot of himself squeezed in a car next to wife Sunrise Coigney. “On our way,” he captioned the cute pic.

Colin Jost Sneaking Tequilla to His Seat

Jost was seen sneaking the mini Tequila Don Julio cocktail from the red carpet to his seat inside the ceremony.

Kim Kardashian Took the Red-Carpet Commute Lying Down

Literally, y’all. As she revealed via Instagram, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star had to lie down for the entire ride to the red carpet. Why? Her dress was too tight for bending!

Brad Pitt Addressed His Awards Show Speeches

After accepting his statuette for Best Supporting Actor in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, Brad Pitt made his way to the press room. There, he was asked the thing that’s been on everyone’s mind: Has he had professionals writing his speeches all season long? “Historically, I’ve always been really tentative about speeches,” he shared. “They make me nervous. So this round, I figured if I am going to do this, I am going to put some real work in and get comfortable. This is a result of that. But no, I definitely write. I have some very funny friends that help me with some laughs, but it’s got to come from the heart.”

Laura Dern Offered Advice for Aspiring Female Actors

After her Marriage Story win, Laura Dern — gracious and wonderful creature that she is — took a moment to send out some sage advice to young female creatives in the world. “You have to use your voice in life. You have to stay true to yourself, whoever you are. As my fourth-grade teacher advised me, the best advice I got: ‘Keep your eyes on your own paper.’ And in a social media heyday, to stay true to your own inner voice and not be too focused on the wins. And to feel blessed when we get to do what we love in this life,” she told the press.
