“Beef ”Scores an Awards Threepeat, Topping Emmys Limited Series Category After Globes and Critics' Choice Wins

'Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,' 'Daisy Jones and the Six,' 'Fleishman Is in Trouble' and 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' were also in the running for this year's award

Beef become an award show threepeat when it won this year's outstanding limited or anthology series at the 2023 Emmy Awards. The Netflix hit also won at the Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globes earlier this month.

Netflix's Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Prime Video's Daisy Jones and the Six , FX on Hulu's Fleishman Is in Trouble and Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi also faced off to win the coveted prize.

“You know a lot of the suicidal ideation in this show was based on stuff that I and some of the folks up here have struggled with over the years, and so I'm really grateful and humbled by everyone who watched the show and reached out about their own personal struggles,”  writer, creator, showrunner and executive producer Lee Sung Jin shared while accepting the award. “It's very life-affirming. So thank you.”

“And I feel like we live in a world designed to kind of keep us separate. You know, even here, some of us go home with trophies other people don't," he continued. "And I think for some of us, when we live in a world like this, you begin to think that there's no way anyone could ever understand you. Or like you have much less even, you know, no potential at being loved. And so the greatest joy of working on Beef has truly been working with the folks up here who love so unconditionally.”

“So, you know, thank you to them and anyone out there who directly or indirectly was involved with the show, thank you so much,” he added.

He concluded his speech with a special shout-out to his pups, sharing, “And lastly, everything I do is for my three dogs, so if the Federal Drug Administration could please fast track that canine anti-aging pill that would be so lovely. Thank you so much.”

Beef followed two people in the wake of a road rage incident that ended up taking over both of their lives. The pair quickly found their lives intertwined — and the event's aftermath laid the groundwork for a complex cultural examination that resonated with its stars.

The anthology series starred Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, who were both up for their respective awards in outstanding actress and actor in a limited series categories. Breakout star Young Mazino and Hollywood veteran Maria Bello were also in the running to be named outstanding supporting actor and actress in a limited series.

Daisy Jones & The Six was also in contention for the prize. Based on Taylor Jenkins Reid's best-selling novel of the same name, the show detailed the rise and fall of a fictional '70s rock band — loosely inspired by Fleetwood Mac — and its enigmatic frontwoman Daisy Jones.

Daisy Jones & The Six followed the source material, which took readers deep into the world of 1970s-era rock scene and centered on The Six's lead singers Daisy and Billy Dunne as they fell into a love triangle.

Leading actress Riley Keough earned a nominee this year, as did supporting actress Camila Morrone.

Fleishman Is in Trouble adapted New York Times journalist Taffy Brodesser-Akner's 2019 novel of the same name.

Jesse Eisenberg starred as Toby Fleishman as he navigated dating amid the unexpected absence of his estranged wife Rachel (Claire Danes), sending Toby's world into a tailspin.

Danes earned an outstanding supporting actress nomination, and Lizzy Caplan vied in the 2023 race for outstanding limited or anthology series actress for playing Fleishman's friend Libby Epstein, who helped him unfurl the mystery of Rachel's seeming disappearance.

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story was perhaps the year's most controversial hit among viewers.

Starring Evan Peters as serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, the series portrayed numerous murders from the perspective of his victims. Just the latest in a series of projects to examine Dahmer's crimes, Ryan Murphy's Monster was first announced in March 2021 with the American Horror Story alum attached to lead.

Dahmer raped, murdered and dismembered at least 17 men and boys in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, between 1978 and 1991, shocking the world with his cannibalism and necrophilia.

In addition to Peters' nomination for outstanding actor in a limited series, his costars Richard Jenkins and Niecy Nash-Betts also received the acknowledgment of the TV academy in 2023.

Lastly, Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi series picked up 10 years after the events that transpired in the 2005 film Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, during which the Jedi Master's best friend Anakin evolves into Darth Vader.

Ewan McGregor reprised his role as the title character, reuniting on-screen with Hayden Christensen, who previously played Anakin Skywalker in the popular film franchise.
